Dr. Mark Goodacre is the Frances Hill Fox Professor of Religious Studies at Duke University, North Carolina, USA. He earned his MA, M.Phil and DPhil at the University of Oxford. His research interests include the Gospels, the Apocryphal New Testament, and the Historical Jesus. Goodacre is the author of four books including The Case Against Q: Studies in Markan Priority and the Synoptic Problem (Harrisburg, PA: Trinity Press International, 2002) and Thomas and the Gospels: The Case for Thomas's Familiarity with the Synoptics (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2012). He is well known for creating web resources on New Testament and Christian origins, including his podcast, the NT Pod. Goodacre has acted as consultant for several TV and radio programs including The Passion (BBC / HBO, 2008) and Finding Jesus (CNN, 2015-17). Goodacre is currently working on a book on John's knowledge of the Synoptic Gospels.

Dr. Goodacre believes he has solved the synoptic problem. The Farrer Hypothesis (FH) proposes that Luke reworked Matthews Gospel. Did the Q source exist? Dr. Mark Goodacre doesn't believe in the Q source.

"What happens with a lot of NT scholars is they get caught up in this idea, well could Jesus really prophecy or not. That's not the question. The question is, what's the function of the prophesy in the text. " Wise words and underscores the importance of asking the right questions.

Sorry Christian Apologists. Yeah, you all have tons of books on your shelves in the background, but I am way more trusting of a man with his Shot Glass collection.

"Written in the 70s" is so much cooler when he means 70 CE

This makes so much sense. I always wondered how Jesus could predict so much stuff and why Church always focused on it, but the writings were to show that he did that, after fact.

I think Marc is starting his Gospel with John the baptist because in his early Christian community, there were some people who believe that John was the founder of the brotherhood, and Jesus was a simple folower of John. So, Marc provides the information that there was a conflict on who is really the big boss

Another great and engaging interview. Also love the new intro ...huge improvement...but it could be made more accurate by the Derek character asking each of the mythological beings if they’ve heard of Full Preterism.

Great talk!
Since scholars are putting the gospels' authorship in the Judean-Roman inter-war period (70 CE - 132 CE), what I'd love to see is a comparison against all contemporary literature such as 4 Ezra, 2 Baruch, and others.

Haven't seen it anywhere, and it's a vital comparison to make!

Those who remain unconvinced by Dr. Goodacre's ironclad arguments must have been misdirected to this 'Dating the Gospels' clip via the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Well done. Dr. Goodacre.

Aside from the question of the ability of Jesus to prophesy or even merely predict the destruction of Jerusalem, the language describing the destruction is general rather than detailed. Those recording Jesus' prophesy of this would likely have included more detail had they experienced this series of devastating events or had talked with witnesses of these events. It has also been argued that Jesus could have couched his prediction based solely on OT precedents. No mention of destruction of temple, Nero's persecution, Peter/Paul's death thus a date prior to AD62 is best for the dating of Luke. * Further the latest possible date for luke is about AD80 as there is evidence of its use from 95 on and since Acts makes no use of Paul's letters.

I'm kinda disappointed that he didn't give any evidence for Mark coming first. He just asserted that it was true, then went on with his theories about the dating of everything else.

I must say that the more I listen to Dr. Goodacre the more I am persuaded that he is right. He particularly got my attention when he questioned how it is that all of our Evangelists basically start the Jesus story with John the Baptist. It is interesting that the Apostle Paul doesn't ever mention John in his epistles, and Paul was basically an exact contemporary of Jesus.
