Glad to see I'm not the only one who has absolutely no idea what he did

I have absolutely no idea how to apply what you just talked about lol

As is clear by the comments, we'd mighty appreciate it Aaron if you could make another video explaining this concept. Thanks for the amazing content you put out!

Great example of taking a simple concept and over-complicating it with technical jargon. McGill is a legend but that was damn near impossible to take anything away from that short clip. Short form content is great but it still has to make sense!

It’s basically just a back extension in a shorter range of motion while also holding a weight. Then you can move the blocks up and down to focus more on each separate spinal joint segment/area of the erector muscles. Hope this helps translate haha 😅

LEMME EXPLAIN: He is leaning on the blocks about mid way through his torso while on a slight incline. He has now created a fulcrum (teeter totter) with his body and the blocks. He is controlling which part of his back takes the load/ activates more by moving the blocks down or up. This is an effective way to "isolate" maximal neural drive to different parts of your back/erector. Because normal movements don't provide enough neural drive to your back, and use most of the erector at once.

HOW TO DO THE EXERCISE: Note that it is similar to Supermans or Back Extension.
1. Grip the load tightly
2. Keep your back in a slight flex
3. Start the movement by extending your back until you reach neutral. No need to over extend.
4. Hold for time, or lowering back down into slight flexion and perform for reps/sets.
5. Change the position of the block to target a different part of your erector.
6. Repeat 1-5 as needed.

Being a good teacher isn't about what you know.

its about getting others to understand what you know.

I have no clue what he said or how it applies

“Shifted my brain down to the neuromuscular compartments”
Uhhhh…

ThanksYep

Damn! I was wondering where my brain is. Apparently my brain is trapped in my neuromuscular compartment low on my back. My dad called it something different. He said my head was up my ass. Either way, I have been doing this all my life.

Watching the clip twice made it a lot clearer. The long back muscles they showed can essentially be trained in chunks, and by training each chunk we can create an overall dense system throughout the entire back muscle.

Never heard someone say so much but nothing at the same time 😂

McGill is fucking great. I had severe ciatic pain in an amusement park and started walking backwards in hills, pain went away. Thanks david laid for that interview with the guy

😂😂😂😂😂 were all in this together! *high-school musical*

So if I’m getting this right:
1. Lay down on an elevated bench
2. Use an object (or fulcrum) to prop up your chest
3. With a weight either in both hands (or only one to target a specific side) you only use your back muscles to straight your body

In the video the old guy looked like he bent his back over the “fulcrum” and he sorta implied motion of straightening his back

Plz correct if I’m wrong or if I can simplify that better

Essentially for everyone wondering, the spinal erectors aren’t optimally developed with just the deadlift, so instead the exercise shown, he uses the boards to make it so that his back slightly rounds over so that you start to feel the stretch and activation of different parts of the erectors. And so using the kettle bell or probably a dumbbell too, you can work the erectors by trying to arch back or contract as he said in the video. Stretching the muscle and contracting it like any other exercise. As explained the erectors need flexion/movement of the spine, which is not optimal during a deadlift. So instead do this exercise. Boards go under your chest, then lay on them so your back slightly rounds forward, and then bend back with a kettle bell in one hand to contract the spine and then switch hands repeat.

Crazy how bodybuilders are so aware at the muscular & nerve level and could figure out such a thing with a long training experience to showcase it to doctors.

I don't understand how you would apply that advice to something like a deadlift. Could you specify?
