Matt, how do you feel about a figure 8 cast for the thumb whatever it’s called??
I saw were Physical Therapist said to wear it during the day to decrease inflammation but to still take it off to do the exercises about three times a day ??

Do you think it’s important to rest if the joints are swollen because she says it gets too tight as the tendon tries to slide through there ??

My grandmother would make a point of laying her hands, palm down, on a flat surface for some time every day so they would retain a certain minimum level of flexibility.

I have a similar problem with my right thumb, originating from a repetitive use injury more than 20 years ago. Accupuncture eventually cleared up the pain and inflammation but I never recovered full control over the muscles in the thumb. It especially limits any attempt to bring the tip of my thumb together with the tip of my index finger in order to pick up a small object. Instead I just need to use my left hand for tasks like that.

Last year I had a bodyworker tell me she thought the problem was really with the nerves rather than the muscles. But the herbal remedy she had me try didn't seem to have any effect. The closest description I've ever seen to a similar problem was with something called "focal dystonia" - a problem with spasming muscles that often effects musicians. They talked about a combination of movement therapies and possibly some type of injectible. (I don't remember now what it was)

For me the problem muscles seem to be: 1) at the base of the thumb where it meets the wrist (not by the 2nd knuckle like you were showing in the stretches); and also 2) in the muscles or tendons in the palm below the index finger. Interestingly, I will sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and notice that my right thumb is completely relaxed and lying in a very open position. If I don't try to move it and don't put too much awareness on it, it can stay that way while I fall back to sleep.

This may be the result of trigger points. I suggest looking into it. You may get instant relief!

hello i am a 64 yaers old man who starts to surf. since my age it is hard to make a porper pop up on my 7.6 surf board. i am not fast enough and i will appreciate if you can give me advise and excercise in order to perform a good pop up. the most hard thing is to pop on the knees. is easy if i point the thumbs but is not the same.

Wow, sometimes I have a finger that gets stuck. I also have an issue with my toes being stuck. I get these insane foot cramps. It looks Like I'm throwing gang signs with my toes.

is this what they call trigger finger? lately I wake up with my middle finger curled and when I straighten it up, it kind of snaps/pops before going straight.

I find that the problem isn't necessarily with the thumb or fingers, but the forearm, starting about four inches above the wrist.

Same with me but I can't close or bend my left thumb on my own, I had a cut on my thumb when I was a kid
