How to tell if your thumb is broken or sprained

You will know if you sprained your thumb if it gets bent back and then hurts afterwards. A thumb sprain happens when the ligaments at the base of the thumb get stretched or partially torn. Most of the time your thumb will hurt after you sprain it if you move it all the way out and in, or put weight on it. 
It can be hard to differentiate between a torn ligament in your thumb and just a sprained thumb. Normally a torn ligament will hurt more than a sprain, but the level of pain depends on the injury and the person who sustained it. The best way to determine if you tore a ligament in your thumb is to see a hand surgeon, who can test the injured ligament to see if it has torn all of the way. They will usually also get x-rays to make sure that you didn’t break your thumb also. The most common torn ligament in the thumb is the ulnar collateral ligament at the base of the thumb.

Hello doc, if you see this reply hope you answer me asap, I sprained my thumb around two months ago and it hurt about two days and the pain just disappeared, but a couple of days ago the pain just came back, even though i can still move my thumb back and forth with no problem.
Right now the pain just comes and goes but not too much.
I can still grab things with no problem as if nothing happened.
Shall i go to the clinic or shall i just wear a thumb splint until the pain goes away permanently?
Also, is it too late to fix my thumb forever?

I got a knot right where he talked about UCL, that knot below my thumb hurts like he'll and it's been over a month. I can't stretch my thumb out all the way if I was 2 do a "thumbs up" . Am I 2 worry or NO???

The ligament you talked about. The "outer" side where you feel the bone, is bigger than my other thumb. I went to the doctor and he said "skiers thumb, wait a couple of days" it doesn't hurt but It has a limited range of motion. Any advice, since I really want to go skiing again

I had it X-ray and everything they said it was just a sprained but sometimes it would randomly slip and the mcp joint would hurt for a little bit. Should I just get another scan? I played a lot of volleyball and I tape the thumb always

Answered exactly 0 questions I had. Your advice is basically just go to the doctor which I’m assuming people did not want to do so they watched this video. Like someone asking how to make a cake and instead of giving ingredients you say go to the grocery store and buy a cake.
