An optometrist uses a phoropter to refract and obtain a person's glasses prescription, which can then be used to get a contact lens prescription. This process is usually straight forward, but can sometimes cause some anxiety. These 10 tips can help reduce anxiety, make you more confident during the process, and also help you obtain the best glasses prescription possible from your vision test.

When I said to my doctor in the test that both looked the same, she got mad at me, telling me I was lying, which I wasn't but I still had to pick out one quickly out of worry. Got the glasses later but it takes a long time to get used to it to see it clearly, even though it's been a year. She might be angry but she actually helped me fix my eyes when I was a kid.

I’ve been squinting hard to read the letters during eye tests for as long as I can remember, thinking it would help me see better, but it turns out that’s exactly what I shouldn’t be doing! If I can see the letters, there’s no need to squint because it actually messes with the results, making it seem like I can’t see 20/20 without the squinting. I’ve been doing this for years, and I just realized how much it was throwing off my eye tests. Honestly, I think doctors should remind us of this little tip before taking the test. It’s a simple thing, but it makes such a big difference in getting an accurate reading. Would’ve saved me a lot of confusion if I had known earlier!

I always squint and my new glasses are always lousy to look through. Makes sense not to squint. Idkw my doctor never told me that.

Thank you for tip number 10! I've been wearing glasses since I was 6, so for 22 years, and I didn't know small differences like that had such an impact! It's frustrating when someone asks if I am far sighted or near sighted because everything looks crappy no matter what distance it's at. I know I have bad astigmatism and have just accepted bad vision as my fate but maybe I just suck at taking eye exams 😅

This is really helpful! The older I get, the longer it takes my eyes to focus on the next lens they show. I'm assuming that's normal?

Thanks Dr Eye Guy for the helpful tips. I've seen three different ophthalmologists and can't get a good prescription for my left eye. In fact my primary ophthalmologist recently said maybe I just can't get a prescription for my left eye which I found a bit concerning. I'll try some of these tips on my next exam.

Do you think a 0.25 change in SPH in a year could be considered normal fluctuation? I.e. the change could have been due to stress, dry eyes rather than an actual prescription change?

Great tips! Wish I had seen this before my recent eye exam. The exam was done by an assistant, not the eye doctor. Testing was done one eye at a time but not with BOTH EYES after each eye was completed, which is what they used to do. Is that a mistake or correct?

Hi doctor, I am farsighted and have presbyopia. My new glasses are progressives. But, without telling me, the lad who prescribed the lenses seems to have tried to also make them also monovision. In other words, he made the left eye lens strong like it's for near, and the right eye lens weak like it is for distance. I think this is kind of stupid, if you ask me. First of all, he didn't tell me what he was doing. Second, the thing about progressives is that you are really adjusting the power by tilting your head. But, the way he has it set up is that is never really clear because there is the interference from the mono vision aspect of it. So, if I cover one eye and look at something it will be clear in one eye, and blurry in another. I was of the belief that you do progressives if monovision doesn't work for you. Not both at the same time. You don't get the best of both worlds, you get the worst of both worlds. But, I may be missing something. What is your opinion?
