1080p vs. 720p On Smartphones, How Big Of A Difference Does It Make?

I talk about the differences between 1080p and 720p resolution on smartphones, and whether or not it makes a noticeable difference. The two phones I use here are the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4. While it may seem obvious that 1080p is better than 720p, the fact is that there is a point where the human eye can't tell the difference in resolution (or PPI). So the question is a valid one, does 1080p really make that much of a difference? Watch the video and find out!

You wanna know the difference between a 1080p screen and a 720p screen on a phone?

"Just take a look under the microscope" Yah, there's proof that people will go way too far to prove more pixels is better.

I think more apps (actually mostly 3D games) should include a resolution option. It would really help against possible performance problems in the future and it works pretty good in GTA: Vice City (which has a resolution slider in the options)

I have both a 720p and a 1080p phone and I can't tell a difference. I'd gladly take 720p phone since it helps improve battery life by 10~15% compared to having 1080p screen.

It really comes down to having a better screen more then a higher resolution. I'd rather have a top of the line 720p screen that's bright vibrant and has good color/black levels vs. a dull, washed out 1080p screen. Also 720p is generally going to give you better performing phones, especially as hardware gets better. Better FPS in games and faster phones at the cost of a barely perceivable difference in resolution.

I love watching these videos from these days. When 1080p was the new thing damn

What I meant was twice the resolution in both directions, but you're right the total number of pixels is four times that of 1080p.

He gave a range (250-350 PPI) in which the eye could no longer discern the differences in pixel density and he's absolutely right. The iPhone has a pixel density of 326 and Apple dubbed it a retina display because of that reason. All the 1080P phones have a 400+ pixel density so consumers are not going to be able to tell the difference between it and a 720P screen.

Just read a recent article that Sony had just made a 4k resolution phone..

"1080p is the highest resolution we really need on a smartphone, at least in the current form factor."

Still true to date, which makes me wonder why Samsung feels the need to bump up the S7's display to 2k, only for diminishing returns and at the expense of graphical performance. Don't get me wrong, I really think that the S7 is otherwise the perfect flagship and that it's still 2016's phone to beat, but I think Samsung made the wrong move with the resolution bump seeing as the S7 couldn't keep up with the iPhone 6s' (released months before the S7) on-screen graphical performance.

Best for battery:
Phones: 720p
Phablets (5" above): 1080p
Small Tablets (7"-8"): 1920x1200
Large Tablets (9"-10"): 2560x1600

Is there an uncensored 18+ version of this video? He keeps saying 'pee pee', I want the hardcore version

the problem here is people define HD depending on the number of horizontal pixels.
it should be defined based on pip.

i don't know what people have against pentile screens. i personally prefer them, photos and text just look more natural to me on them, also on lower resolutions. mostly since i don't get as many straight lines that are noticeably aliasing

720P is good enough for a phone. I looked at the S4 and HTC One and really couldn't see a significant difference in clarity from the iPhone 5 or GS3. However brightness, contrast and screen refresh looked much better. But screen technology is always evolving. .
