You can either have a detailed game that looks slightly blurry, or a super-crisp child's drawing

Simple answer, a 17" 720p monitor will theoretically look as crisp as a 24" 1080p monitor. It all comes down to the pixel density. So, as you increase monitor size, you should increase resolution as well.

i feel like it comes down to the display size, if you're on a 20'' monitor you can get away with 720p, but the bigger the display the worse using low resolutions gets. but that's just my two cents, my point is debatable.

720p ultra looks good on a *native* 720p screens..
if it played on a 1080p.. it will look blurry

1080p: approx. 2, 000, 000 pixels
720p: approx. 900, 000pixels

Difference: 1, 100, 000 pixels.
Fact: 720p will only look blurry on 1080p or higher monitor. The circles will look jaggy on 720p because it lacks pixels. We smartphone users might not be able to notice the difference but try this on a computer with a 1080p monitor. You will be able to see difference. If not, try to screenshot the game and zoom it. You will see the pixels more clearly on 720p than the 1080p.

In some games the difference is quite negligible. But in Tomb Raider especially, the difference is huge. Still, if its the performance you care about more, 720p is definitely very tolerable.

Lol what's the point of having a higher resolution to notice how shitty the textures look.

Quality/performance, you forgot to show the fps.

I just play games in 720p low because I don't care about graphics, except for blooms, lighting, particle, lowest shadow setting and readable map textures like posters because those are essential for immersion and I don't see too much difference between 1080p and 720p.
I think it's a healthy habit for my pc to sacrifice the things I don't even need to be processed.

I have a monitor with a resolution of 1280x960 (4:3). most modern games do not support 4:3 aspect ratio, so they use screen caching, black borders on top and bottom. so with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the active resolution is 1280x720. On a CRT monitor, 720p resolution looks incredibly clear.
I have a nvidia geoforce gtx 750ti (2gb) video card and it is only suitable for 720p resolution and below.
Since I have a 17" CRT monitor, I sometimes choose 640x480 resolution to get a higher fps. 640x480 is the minimum resolution that can be selected on a PC.
My CRT monitor supports the following resolutions:

1080p is bit more bright and shadow direction changed and nothing more enjoy 720p with high fps

I still regularly play my Xbox (no achievements, just fun games, they’re way ahead of their time. Or maybe the newer games are garbage?) so playing games like Elden Ring and MW2 reboot on 720p lowest settings still looks amazing on my pc!

and this is why upscaling has gotten so popular, you have the performance of 720p while it looking close enough to 1080p as to where it isn't blurry, same applies for 1440p upscaled from 1080p

900p with medium settings as a compromise maybe.

1080p low > 720p ultra except bf1 the shimmering bushes looked terrible in 1080p. The sharper resolution is still better than the improved visual quality of shadows and what not. Though maybe at a distance 720p is better but up close just no.

after watching this video, anyone who thinks 1080p+low combination is good is a shamr to gaming community...

You made the test in 2 diferent display? Or you just down de resolution? Cause when you use a monitor with a 1366x768 native resolution the definition is more bright, i dont think is fair make the comparisson with a 1920x1080 native display just changing the resolution.

the 1080p suffers a lot with light distortion look at the leaves etc, they kind of sparkle t try make the image look better, most stuff is upscaled so lots of shimering etc but hey everyone has different specs
