Auto Electrical Relays Explained - How they work and where they're used.

An explanation of automotive electrical relays and how they work, using a small current to switch a larger load without running heavy cables to heavy duty switches on your dash board.

The two types explained in this video are single contact/throw as used when modifying and adding spotlights etc. and the second type is a double throw/change relay quite often found in headlight circuits.

A good piece of knowledge to have when electrical fault finding on cars and trucks electrical systems, as if you know how it works then you can understand when it doesn't work.

Great video. Excellent. Diagrams and examples were perfect. I'm a mechanic 8 years and like to refresh my memory from time to time. It doesn't have to be anymore complicated to explain a relay than this. Using the low and high beam is a perfect example for the double pole. Best demonstration video I've ever found on youtube. Perfect length, narration, and description, and illustration. I love it.

I wonder if i can use one of these relays for my garden lights. I want to detect if solar panel has power in the cable. Then enable battery 12 v to the lights if so. These seem like a good solution if i can find some free ones.

So this would be a 5 pin relay. For the 4 pin like the giant one in the middle of the thumbnail, change "normally closed" to "always open" or erase it entirely.
