Need to quickly access an Excel file or Word document in a Teams Channel? It is easy to add a file as a documents tab in a channel. This is so much easier than trying to find a file. If there is an Excel file you access daily or frequently in Teams, make it a Tab. Before making the document tab, the file must exist in the channel.

Method 1 to make a channel tab

Click the plus sign to add a tab
Click or Search for the app you want to make a tab. I used Excel in the video.
Teams will display the file type you selected. If you searched for Word, you will see Word documents, if you searched for Excel, you will see Excel spreadsheets.
Select the file you want to make a tab.
Post to this channel will allow other to quickly find the tab for the 1st time.
Click Save.

Method 2 to make a channel tab

Click on Files tab
Find the file you want to make a tab
Click the three dots for Show Actions
Click Make this a Tab

Brilliant video, Chris, thanks! I had spent a couple of hours looking for an app to display a spreadsheet in Teams, but this method is great, and hopefully my boss will be as impressed with this solution as I am. This video alone has convinced me to subscribe to your channel. :)

Terrific video Chris. Love your layout and approach. I will subscribe and push my colleagues (many BRAND new to using nestled files within MS Teams) to do likewise. Drag and drop rather than Upload sounds great.____ Here's the issue I am having, when you select the file to drag (at 1:50) where are you dragging it FROM ? You seem to grab it from the sidebar. I don't have any files there. My existing sheet exists elsewhere (locally) on my computer. Need to get the file from another location (folder) into a place where I can select it from inside teams. Hope I am explaining the question properly. Great vid. Must watch your other ones too!

Chris, thanks for the video. What we are having issues with is the original Excel Doc not updating when its updated on teams. How do we link the file from its original location to Excel and make it so the team can edit, and so that it will also save in the original document location?

HI Chris. I want to add an excel file from a folder in my Documents library that is updated automatically in the Excel 'Teams' App . right now you approach of 'Uploading' the actual file does not sync and hence i do not get the updated data. Any solution to this ? PLease help Thanks

Hello - thank you for sharing! So I have an excel file that lives on share point - if I add it to a channel as a tab will it provide live updates to the share point file? and vice versa? How can I make this happen?

If you have a macro in the spread sheet will it carry over to teams?

This is amazing! Would it be an option in the future to link the file there to the spreadsheets online so once you update the file on Teams, it can be reflected online?

Hi Chris, Great video. I have a client who wants to use Macros in Excel in Teams. I've advised them, that isn't currently possible. But I wonder if an Add-in on a user's machine can run tasks on an Excel spreadsheet in Teams. Do you happen to know?

Thanks for the video Chris. I see comments below saying that other team members can edit the excel file. Love that. But my team members are showing in Read Only format. Way to change that?

I'm a bit confused as to the purpose of adding a tab like you've demonstrated. Does adding a tab (e.g. Excel) effectively just create a filter/shortcut to all files of that type stored in the Files tab?
