They have wheels because they are “track laying” vehicles, meaning that they run on a ‘track’ that they ‘lay’ as they move. The track, like a train track, is there to provide a (relatively) flat and smooth surface and distribute the weight over a larger area than the wheels could. The tank moves ‘on’ the wheels, the wheels move only on the track😊

Most things associated with tank tracks are NOT specific to tanks but are general true for ALL chain drives. Return rollers, slack etc is important to all chain drives.

Did you know that the Christie suspension system on the T-34 and BT light tanks, enables removal of the trackbed, allowing the tanks to drive on roads without their tracks, traversing with the road wheels, to prevent damage to the tracks on hard surfaces.
