Future President Hoover caught in Boxer Rebellion

#shorts
On June 1, 1900, Herbert Hoover and his wife Lou found themselves in the midst of the Boxer Rebellion in China. Having married in Monterey, California, in February 1899, they embarked on a honeymoon cruise to China, where Herbert began work as a mining consultant. When Chinese nationalists rebelled against colonial control, besieging 800 Westerners in Tientsin, Herbert led efforts to fortify their residential area, while Lou aided in the hospital. Legend has it that Herbert rescued Chinese children during the month-long siege.
After an international coalition rescued them, Herbert became a partner at Bewick, Moreing and Co. The couple split their time between California, London, and global travels until 1909. Inspired by their experiences, they aided refugees and tourists stranded in hostile countries. Herbert served as Secretary of Commerce and later became president in 1928. However, his ineffective response to the Great Depression, coupled with Lou's extravagant White House events, tarnished their charitable reputation. Hoovervilles, shantytowns named in protest, became emblematic of the hardship endured during his presidency.
