My mom was valedictorian with a 5.1 GPA. For context, this was Florida in 1994. The top students at her high school left after hurricane Andrew. Gifted classes had one extra point of weight, APs had two.

The problem is, my old high school didn’t weigh their gpas much while my new school does, and my unweighted gpa is now my weighted gpa in a school that loves weighing their gpas…

I knew a lot of the kids from the top of my high school’s class. Kids that would go on to attend Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Cal Tech, etc. Brilliant group of kids who hated almost every second of their existence because of the constant stress and pressure. And then you get to go attend a college where it’s even more competitive than high school. And if you do well there, you might even get hired by a mega corporation that doesn’t care about you at all! Yaaay!!

Yeah my schools used the whole 4.0 GPA is the max thing. I don't think we had special classes for "gifted" students or AP stuff in my district. If they did, they didn't tell me and I was an honor student
