Those calorie counters are just estimates. It can't take into account your actual muscular effort, It just measures heart rate and maybe oxygen level. You probably burned a lot more calories than it can measure.

I think smartwatches use your weight to calculate burned calories. So, you need to increase your weight in the settings first if you want to do this correctly.

better test would be to check your endurance and heart rate for the 5k. 2 weeks without vest to get an average time and heart rate, then 2 weeks with vest to ultimately run for 2 more weeks after to check time and heart rate. you should notice a lower heart rate, more air in your lungs and less muscle fatigue because you work harder to achieve the same time vs unweighted

It might not have done much for your calories but it definitely had a lot more muscle growth

Brother at one side it looks very little, but if you told someone "hey you can burn 10% more calories by running with weights" they would consider it a lot.

There's more to fitness than burned calories. Interested to know how to measure the increase in strength from moving with more weight.

200lb man adds 20lb vest and burns 10% more calories….. I feel like this lines up….

Wearing weight vest is not be about the calories but about resistance and muscle work

You've gotta do more workout/nutrition vids. I need to know your routine/regimen.

This dude looks great with a mustache. As far as the red shorts go, no words needed. 🤐

The extra caloric expenditure is minimal unless you are doing long extended sessions. I’m fairly certain James Krieger studied this and came to this conclusion. Wearing it all day is a different story. It has a noticeable effect on TDEE.

People in the comments pretending to understand caloric consumption, need to chill.

Running do spend more calories than walking, the study that people use to say that it is the same, only shows that the AVERAGE speed MOST people run at, shows little difference in caloric use, meaning, if you run at 5 mph or walk at 3 mph the calories won't be massively different, probably withing 10% difference, depending on running skill and conditioning, but the effort it's for sure much higher for untrained people, raise that speed to 7 mpg and 20+% difference can be observed, 10 mph can be upwards of 50% extra calories used, it all depends on how fast you run, and how much effort you need to run that fast, the better you are running the lower that difference will be though, but still fairly significant.

Also, weight increase it's not exactly linear with increase in energy use, but it's so close that you can use it as linear, meaning 10% more weight means 10% more calories spent, not exact, at all, but close enough for sure.

In order to have gotten a more accurate test, these should have been done on different days to avoid the strain of the first run effecting the result of the second

My first thought, like some people here, he should've logged in the difference in weight...
But, the would heart rate gives a good enough direction of the 'burning capacity'

30 cal seems substantial, for the same work/parameters+the vest, as guy looks strong enough to carry the weight without too much change in form

Just some bro science, id imagine it'll have a sharper and quicker spike rate after, say the 7th km

Time doesn't matter. Running or walking 5k costs the same amount of energy. As for weight goes, it is somewhat linear, so 10% extra weight is about 10% extra energy.

The estimate of calories burnt for distance by foot is pretty accurate because of this.

It’s not about the calories burnt, it’s about the endurance training, the stamina building, and the muscle training

Bro casually runs a 24min 5k with a hr in 140s

Same amount, calories are by distance not muscular activation or cardiovascular strain
