Thank you.. i was getting frustrated.. my mistake was holding the EDGE (level) and walking around in a 10' figure 8.
Leaning it from side to side, and rotating all the way over. then moving it like the way an airplane would bank was the key. I didn't need to walk around at all, (it was like playing with a toy airplane) You made this Garmin owner very happy.. I just subscribed.. :)

I noticed the navigation arrow when recording on my Garmin 830 was often not pointed in the wrong way so I tried to calibrate the compass as shown above. For almost an hour, no matter what I did, it would not complete the calibration. Turns out Garmin 830's compass wasn't working anymore so no matter what I did it would never finish calibration. If this happens to you, then you need to POWER OFF the garmin. After reboot, the compass works again and calibration completes quickly. In summary, reboot your expensive garmin 830 periodically so that the darn compass works. Geez...
