Suunto Core - How to calibrate the compass

The compass on the Suunto Core automatically calibrates itself with use, but it may need to be calibrated manually in the following circumstances:
- The Suunto Core has been in the vicinity of a large amount of metal (e.g. an airplane).
- It has been in contact with a strong electro-magnetic field
- Extreme cold weather
- The compass has not been used in some time.
- The battery has been changed.
- The service menu has been accessed

My Suunto Core's compass was not working for several months while stuck in the backcountry. This calibration method did not work for me.
I called Suunto, and they gave THESE instructions, which did work for me:

1. Hold down all four corner buttons to put the watch into sleep mode.
2. Hold middle right button to turn the watch back on.
3. Complete the startup options (time, units, date etc.)
4. Toggle over to the compass mode
5. Begin rotating watch clockwise

Perhaps put THIS in the manual.

Okay. Tried the above method again, but this time in the TIME mode. And it worked! So we nee a step inserted at the beginning of 1. above that says go to TIME mode.

This has been the most difficult watch to use I've ever seen. The manual with it's hieroglyphics is undecipherable. These wordless videos look cool, but I can barely follow them much less remember them in the field. There must be some kind of better instructions out there somewhere!

Did you guys know, that the finnish company "suunto" provid(ed) liquid filled metal cased military compasses used in the winter war in ww2?

the one from my grandpa still works.

my compass isn't working still, after going through all those instructions. Keep getting the "Start Compass" message on the screen. No matter what button I push it wont start. No clue what's happening.

Maybe something is wrong with my watch. I tried pressing all four buttons - after attempting to calibrate the watch several times using the standard method - but the watch does not go to sleep. Anyone out there have any thoughts?
