i just realized why that worked, the weapon is designed to explode on impact with the surface and spread out from there. Since it impacted with his fighter, it exploded right there and spread out to engulf the ship

I always wondered why they didn't attack this city-sized object with at least a few planes that are designed to level entire cities - bombers. But of course, I'm glad they didn't so the plot could happen. I'll never forget when that first missile hit watching it in the theater in '96
