CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The President (Bill Pullman) barely escapes the White House as alien vessels open fire on Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A group of intrepid humans attempts to save the Earth from vicious extraterrestrials in this extremely popular science-fiction adventure. Borrowing liberally from War of the Worlds, Aliens, and every sci-fi invasion film inbetween, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Dean Devlin present a visually slick, fast-paced adventure filled with expensive special effects and large-scale action sequences. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world's major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien's evil intent (Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman). While some critics objected to the film's lack of originality and lapses in logic, the combination of grand visual spectacle and crowd-pleasing storytelling proved irresistible to audiences, resulting in an international smash hit.

this part of the movie legit terrified me the first time I saw it as a kid... the mood was so eerie and even though you knew it was gonna be bad, it was somehow still shocking when the lasers shoot. They nailed the suspense buildup.

I truly feel like the 90's was a "golden age" for effects driven films that still hold up well. Because the effects were a blend of miniatures and CGI, and it was still very costly. So studios also heavily invested not only in casting, but the screenplay, music, and making sure it was a true "Blockbuster" that would draw people to the theaters, and keep them coming all summer long. Those days are LONG gone in Hollywood, oh how I miss the 90's.

The effects in this nearly 20 year old clip look more realistic than those in the Resurgence trailer.

After 24 years this is STILL one of The examples of a summer blockbusters.
One of the true timeless classics.

Aliens: "Shall we fire my lord?"

Alien commander: "Yes, but only target the important looking buildings. It looks better in movies."

Blockbuster movies like Independence Day and Twister, both from 1996 generated a real sense of enthusiasm that I haven't noted for other movies over the past quarter-century. I was privileged to be a part of a focus group/survey for the VHS release of Independence Day back in early-September 1996. I got a decent check for my 90 minutes and received an advance copy of Independence Day one day before everyone else delivered by FedEx.

Thanksgiving Eve 1996 (biggest party night of the year) my wife and I went to a nightclub and Independence Day was being screened on several TVs in the place with the volume down of course but half the patrons in the place were doing the dialogue and sound-effects from the film.

My heart was legit pounding in my chest when I watched this in the cinema. I was pushing myself back into the seat when the dog nearly got it. Even now as a 36 year old I get goosebumps at the destruction scenes. We had it good in the 90s.

I know the shot of the White House being destroyed was very expensive to make but it was worth it. The shot of it blowing up is an optical effect NOT a DIGITAL effect. They built a model of the White House and made it right down to the very last detail because it had to look EXACTLY like the White House. Then they carefully rigged explosives inside it and blew it up but played it in super slow motion. IT WAS PERFECT!
It just goes to show that we don't need to use CGI for every single effect when optical effects to the job nicely. Plus, they make the scene look more real. When all special effects in a movie are done with CGI, it makes them look cheap and there are a lot of people who don't like cheaply made movies. Some people prefer to use CGI because they believe it to be cheaper and quicker. But there are a lot of people who enjoy getting their hands dirty to make a spectacular movie effect happen because when it's finished, it's hard work to be proud of. And they were very proud of that White House destruction scene.

Still some of the best miniature effects I've ever seen.

This move worked in the same way Terminator 2 did - Roland Emmerich and his team used every trick in the book - animatronics, minitures, cgi all seamlessly working together. Real movie magic

One of the best and most exciting blockbusters of the 1990s. The build-up to this scene was a masterstroke in suspense and editing.
