I think it is powerfull that Luther was unwittingly accusing the Pope of a crime against God and His people, the crime was charging the people for indulgenses to fund the building of a cathedral. That was not his intent. The reaction of the powerful in the church to support indulgenses was overwhelming and probubly caused the growth of the reformation.
