After someone masters the wheelie, the very next thing they want to do is master the manual! And thanks to youtube, there's tons of how-to's on how to manual. That being said, I've seen three main reasons why people still can't manual, no matter how hard they've tried, and wanted to share them with you.

3 Reasons Why You Can't Manual On a Bike:
1. Using Improper Form
2. Not Feathering the Rear Brake
3. Not Practicing Enough

The real question is... Can you manual yet? If you can't, what do you think is holding you back? Share with us below!

Another one. Go faster. If youre going slow to try and learn its harder to balance. May seem more sketch going faster but its easier
Edit: Make sure youre more than comfortable using your rear brake. Learning to wheelie first may be helpful for this but it depends on the person. If you dont cover the brake and know when to use it/bail youre going to have a bad time

Dang you're good at manuals!! I've been riding bmx bikes since I was 5 and I still can barely wheelie or manual.

Can you do a review of that dog at 4:00?

You are absolutely right on these. I have been riding mtb for almost two decades but only learnt to manual in the last year and a half. Getting the form right is part of it, but then it is just practice practice practice. I decided to set a goal to learn properly so I stopped riding my hardtail with slicks to work and instead started riding my trail bike instead. Now I practice every morning and afternoon on my commute (not on the road!) and am only now at a point where I would say I am getting pretty good at manualling. My top tips:Learn to wheelie first - teaches you brake control.Look ahead, not at your front wheel.Drop your heels.Get your butt way down near the rear wheel.Practice constantly.

#2: the brake is an important safety to keep you from falling on your butt, however it is not the right tool to keep you in balance over the rear wheel. Your legs should be flexing at the knee to keep the rear wheel under your balance point...tiny adjustments. Watch BMXers manualling without brakes to see what I mean. They can manual for miles on flat ground.

I didn't learn how to ride a wheelie until I was 44. I got a fat tire bike two years ago and found out this past summer and fall how much easier it is to wheelie than my MTB. I am 52. I didn't ride my first snowboard until I was 31 and first wake boarded at 30. I don't let age stop me.

Now I know I know that everything is possible and I know height is not an excuse

But.. being a smaller guy in stature makes manualing a mtb bike harder since we can’t lean as far back past the rear wheel. Pair that with a longer wheelbase or a more forward leaning xc geometry or a poorly fitted bike and it’s even harder

I wonder if Seth’s bike hacks would agree with me.

1. Look forward and Not down... If you look down the Front wheel will drop

2. Stretch your hams and ass... Some people have very tight leg muscles from sitting all day... I cant even get that far back because Im also really tight.
If you can get over the Front wheel easier the manual gets self explanatory.
3. Practice.

Overall stretching is good... It makes you way less stiff on the bike.

I know what's holding me back: Fear. My worst crash ever was trying to manual, so I need to get that out of my head. Good vid.

Braking is cheating! But for starters it is ok. You have to balance with your hips (move forward/backward) and use brake at emergency!
