Here is @hubermanlab discussing how to overcome anxiety on episode 22 of the @MEDspiration podcast (available for free on iTunes, Spotify & YouTube). Link to full episode here:

Our brain and nervous system have hard wired mechanisms for generating fear and anxiety, and we have hard wired mechanisms for suppressing our fear and anxiety. It boils down to self generated optic flow which is activated by forward movement and has been shown to suppress the amygdala and to lead to dopamine release (especially when our anxiety is high).

Dr. Huberman discusses how our eyes are designed for us to set our internal state of arousal or calm. His lab’s research is beginning to show how this circuitry holds tremendous potential in the treatment of trauma, circadian biology & understanding the extend to which our vision can impact our internal states & how that might be leveraged in the treatment of mental health & illness!

GIANT props for not putting some sappy "inspirational" music to this.

Moving forward and “being active” will help temporarily, but will just end up being crutches and coping strategies. Chronic anxiety can’t be overcome doing this.

The key is to learn to accept and allow all your symptoms, even the most fucked up ones, and practicing responding as calmly as possible to them over and over until you gradually begin to desensitize your nervous system.

Once your nervous system desensitizes, your symptoms will all fade as a consequence.

This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my YouTube channel 5 months ago about self development. Now I have 304 subs and almost > 100 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I couldn’t have learned without getting started in the 1st place.

I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and I walk 2 hours early morning every day. Exercise brings me calm energy and good feelings. Also being outdoors getting fresh air around nature too

This worked! I was having a panic attack; I tried the lateral eye movements and getting on an elliptical. I feel much better. Thank you Dr. Huberman!

The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel van der Kolk M.D. provides powerful research on how movement and play are so helpful in healing trauma and backs up what Huberman is talking about here. Thanks for getting this out there!

Ha! I used to run "the dish" and the campus at Stanford in the 80s. In 2013 I stopped running. My mental health tanked. Just now getting better thanks to walking and yoga nidra and Huberman Lab.

That's why having some sort of Vision Impairment makes you at high risk for anxiety and more, some people lucky enough to not have any eye impairments.

When you're driving you should be doing lateral eye movements on a regular pattern. You need to be glancing from side to side looking for movements that indicate objects that may come into the path of your vehicle. Defensive driving technique (retired driving instructor)

Driving works fine if you can drive open country roads seeing a wide horizon.

Forty years ago i realized with wonder “there is no PTSD on the road”.
