AMD AFMF TESTED - AMD Fluid Motion Frames is WILD… (LATENCY + FPS)

You might have heard about AMD’s AFMF feature recently - that being AMD Fluid Motion Frames, which yes means saying AMD AFMF is like saying RIP in peace. AFMF is heralded as the one-click way to double your framerates in basically any game. But, like, what actually are “Fluid Motion Frames”? Well, in short, it’s frame generation - the same idea as NVIDIA’s DLSS Frame Generation - but it’s done in-driver. That means that, much like Radeon Super Resolution, the game doesn’t need to support AFMF or frame generation at all. In fact, the game, and even performance monitors like FrameView or OCAT won’t know anything about that generation happening. Now, it does have a few limitations. It only works on RX 6000 and RX 7000 cards, and 700M graphics on APUs - I’m testing with an RX 7600 here - and something I only found out after starting to test: it only supports DirectX 11 and 12 games. No Vulkan support, which means Rainbow Six Siege does not work. Strangely, even when I launched Siege in DirectX 11 mode, it still said it wasn’t supported. Perhaps AMD has just blacklisted the Siege EXE - who knows. But, for a plethora of reasons I’ll explain later, I switched to Starfield instead. Oh and it’s worth noting that you’re meant to have both HDR and VSync disabled for this too. Right, let’s look at some data!

Imo this Afmf is awesome. Especially for Singleplayer coop games. Or CPU heavy games like warhammer total war 3 or Starship troopers extermination. And nobody wiggle his mouse around like that on most games.

And when you use hyper RX, you get more real fps when you wiggle the mouse, because of amd boost.

This tech is a wonder !
played 60 hours on Talos 2 with AFMF on, now playing Plague of Tale, same I jumoed from 60-90fps to 120-200fps in 4K ultra settings
no artifacts to report
no tearing
no lag no latency feeling

20ms is imperceptible.
and in many cases this number fall to 5ms

for First Person Shooters...well I dont need to activate AFMF cause those I play are all less demanding and I play them on a smaller screen 34" 3440. and to be honest when you play online its usual to have 30-40ms ping that come on top of your rendering latency...(I often play from abroad with 140ms..yeah no choice, still waiting for Quantum network tech release)

so 20ms for solo offline games is irrevelant in comparaison to doubling fps.

AFMF doesn't disable with mouse movement its based off difference between frames. The lower the native fps the easier it drops out, the high the fps the less it drops out... aka faster fps means less difference between frames, fast movement also means large difference between frames. From my experience using AFMF it felt like the last preview driver was harder to knock it out of framegen? Using it with a controller seems much more enjoyable idk about latency but the controller I have is a true 1000hz polling rate idk if that help latency?

Odd?, what situation would be optimal tbh if u don't wanna go over your display hz then altleast a 165hz-360hz would be optimal for AFMF and at that point wouldn't u just buy better gpu?

And here i am, playing with auto-HDR and V-Sync on with Afmf on my Alienware w3423dwf with 7900xt. And it works just finde. even without frame cap. I have no tearing or anything on Darktide, Starship troopers extermination.

AFMF made my starfield go from 80 fps to 160 and adding FSR3 (Beta update from few hrs ago) made it go to even 280+ fps
I dont feel any latency like described in the video, I can comfortably aim and play the game like before just smoother.
One of the problems I encountered, is that if i flick my camera too fast it makes a low fps/screen tearing effect
(1440p, ultra setings, on a 7900 xtx)

To be honest, I am quite latency sensitive, I have set my framerate locked to 84fps, and with AFMF, I get a solid 168fps on my 170Hz monitor... To me it's basically the perceptual difference between running with- or without VSYNC on a VRR display. In single player games this is perfectly fine, as you aren't competing with other players, you can also learn to compensate for delay to the delay to some degree... However, once you go down to lower base fps (like under 60) AFMF starts to struggle in many ways... firstly, it will shut off more frequently during quick movement since there are increased "gaps" between frames (AFMF does wants to avoid blurry artifacts when the differences become too big), but also the lower base fps will increase latency quite substantially on top of the added latency of AFMF...

Personally I find it very useful when you play CPU-demanding titles like Baldur's Gate III (in Part III of the game), or when you play story driven 3rd person games, especially with a controller. I don't think it's as massive as TechteamGB tries to make it out. Unless you activate it in competetive games like Counter Strike, Apex Legends, Fortnite etc.

i think the purpose of radeon boost is to complement the AFMF system. i think the boost quickly lowers resolution during rapid frame shifts to maintain higher frames.

also, what is the difference between anti lag, and anti-lag plus?

Used AFMF in helldivers and the experience was fantastic, kind of wonder why the game doesn't yet have native frame gen

Honestly, who feel the difference ? 25 or 50 ms of imput lag / latency ... a normal player don't feel the difference, especially if latency is stable. Human response is 300 ms ... a superplayer can go down to 150-250 ms ... if you want to be better at games like CSGO, play it a lot and try to have the best "game reading" ... run the game at 500fps with 10ms don't help you ! Remember it's online and there are the tickrate of servers ... when you understand that, you don't care about latency ! Latency can be trouble when is 100ms and more because it's noticeable for human ... the better choice is stability.

*adds 16 MILLISECONDS of latency* Sixteen. Milliseconds.

It'd be great to see similar comparison when using an FSR 3 mod such as that by LukeZ. Thanks for the vid!

Great test, thanks for these results.

When I activate the AMFM and Anti lag, it starts freezing, when I turn off the game stay good

Take it for what it is, no one is dropping high reccomended spec competitive multiplayer games thus the need to go from 350 fps to 700+ is not needed, the fluid motion technology is made for the guy wanting to play the newest beautifull AAA title or the badly optimesed but amazingly pretty indie game on a gen old or maybe in the future 2 gens old gpu increasing the shelf life of the experience, amd is playing the long game, they just added long lasting performance to their already long list of extended support with past generation cpus, future proofing AM5 socket, and uncontested prices. If your missing shots in cyberpunk 2077 or wiffing eagle eye slow mo's in Red dead 2 its probably a skill issue keep you AFMF on and get gud and enjoy your free frames <3

Adding this on a driver level is genius. Nvidia needs to catch up. Lots of games that are optimized like crap and need frame gen to be playable, usually don't include frame gen of any kind for some reason. Wish Nvidia had this...

i played cs with it just to test the input lag and honestly it wasn't that bad, not worth when i already get 240 but i wanted to see how bad it was, but it wasn't bad at all. single player games with this is very good, 60 fps high 1440p on rdr2 6600xt

in my case when i play overwatch with AFMF it works for hour or two and then i get a weird bug where the fps drops every few seconds and gets back to normal and does it again, like clockwork. Does anyone else have this same problem is so, how do I fix it

you can use AMD frame gen on geforce cards through mods.
