I started out thinking this would be a case of "greedy children who don't like step mom." I certainly was proven wrong.... step mom took money owed to the children. I would also have her investigated for fraud.

I have a mail order bride step-mom. Barely older than my oldest sibling. When my father eventually passes, I do believe she will be fair. But I also believe she has suffered with him for so long and kept him from being our problem so she deserves whatever she gets.

She was grabbing the money even before he was buried.... that says it all. He could have had beneficiaries listed on his financial accounts and institutions would have been divided with each. Hard to imagine a educated engineer would not be smart enough to have left a will.

JJ: "Madam if you were married to him 30 years maybe I could side with you, but you were married 3 years" .Defendant: "Doesn't matter". JJ: "you are entitled to pay for all the funeral expenses." Defendant: "We were only married 3 years." Notice how she snickered after that because she realized how stupid her defense was by saying her 3 years of marriage was long enough that she gets everything, but 3 years also doesn't make her married long enough to pay all funeral cost.

It's episodes like this that make me cringe. My father doesn't have a will, not married, and I am his only kid. Unfortunately, he has multiple girlfriends and two "stepsons" who he promised that I would split half with. So, I have no idea how he wants me to divide the property with.
