In the opening sections of his Natural History Pliny the Elder gives several reasons for concluding that the earth is a sphere. Later he adds one more reason, almost as if he had just heard someone say the earth is flat. He says (I paraphrase). ''If the Earth was flat a ship sailing to the horizon would get smaller and smaller then disappear But it does not. It sinks slowly, showing the curvature of the earth.''

The one thing I just don’t understand about flat-earths (anyone feel free to enlighten me) is why would a governor, organization, etc lie about it? What is there to gain by hiding the “fact” that the earth is flat?
