Walking is great for fitness - if you do it properly.

Joanna Hall, creator of the Walkactive programme, heads to Bondi beach, Sydney for the first of three short films that show you how to get postural, fitness and cosmetic benefits from your walking. And the first simple change to make to your walking technique? Make sure you have an active foot and an open ankle for the best workout.

I just discovered it before watching this video, it's better to walk by pressing your toes on the ground to feel the pressure on your knees as well as your hips and calves, you gonna feel better, more flexible and agile. It also makes your legs more solid and strong.Thank you Joanna for this informative video, very helpful for those who are suffering from bad posture and fragile legs.

This video may seem weird for some people, but for other like myself it actually takes conscious effort to consistently walk like this. I have pes cavus and it's almost impossible for me to put my hind-foot first when I take a step because naturally for me the forefoot goes first. We all have our own struggles!

I started walking like this a few weeks ago as I was getting foot pain, one web site recommended this technique, my foot pain has gone, other benefits I did not expect, my balance improved dramatically, this is never mentioned, I had prostate surgery a few years ago and it left me with incontinance, I did the recommended kegal stuff but gave up it was useless, this method of waking is obviously affecting the pelvic floor muscle as their is a big improvement, not perfect but amazing, just one example, when I got up around 6am every morning to go to the toilet, I either had to urinate into a bottle or hold myself to stop leaking before I got to the toilet, not any more! I am 79.

0:45 is a demonstration, and it's heavy heel striking.
Which is bad.
Because those shoes are padding her heel. Otherwise she wouldn't last too long doing that. Even in shoes, that will start to get sore after a while.
Seems the right way to do it is to have less padding in the way, land on the ball of the foot, then the heel comes down right after that. Not in an exaggerated weird way though. The foot has evolved to do that.

Then as far as lifting your foot to take off, and everything else shown in the video... I imagine that's all fine.

Edit: Oops, turns out she actually isn't landing on her heels (read the thread).

Guardian, your video was a little bit better than most. You showed some walking steps but for me to get the flow on walking more walking could of helped. Thanks I will be watching. I hope that there can be put into improving walking video.

What's an "open" ankle?

The “toe off” with the trailing leg makes sense, but aren’t you also supposed to be coming down on the front leg’s toes, balls or forefoot of the foot….versus coming down with a “heel strike”? For the woman’s height, maybe she’s taking too long of a stride? I’m at the tail end of transitioning into “zero drop, wide toe box” shoes….I have been for a couple of years now. And I’m working on my stride to spring from the trailing leg’s toes/forefoot and come down of front leg’s forefoot….and I’m feeling better balance and definitely improving my posture (I’m a male in my mid 60s; 6’2”. Maybe it’s different for females?). Nice video, though…..looks like a pretty area that you chose to film in!

I'm having trouble in "learning how to walk" since my surgery where the tibial nerve was excised at the ankle due to a Schwannoma tumor. I don't have sensory feeling on the sole of my foot or toes. My big toe tends to go upward and therefore it does not touch the ground completely. And on top of this I'm 65...

I've not been walking properly - I've not been using my toes (I've no nail on one big toe and pain in the other) and I think am suffering as a result. I'm going to try and persevere with this way of walking to see if it helps.
