First off, mechanics doing that will help with fuel consumption.

Second off, the actual oxygen sensor is inside the pip, not hanging out, they also would make the sensor cover durable for weather, dust, and high heat. So it doesn't matter if their is dust on it or not.

So yeah, most o2 sensors will throw a DTC if it's out of specifications. That "dust" is rust on the outside of the sensor. Soaking it in a muriatic acid solution isn't going to do much of anything to the carbon buildup that happens on the actual sensor side of things.


Just replace it.
