Can you believe that you don’t actually have to use chopsticks to eat sushi? Here’s the right — and wrong — way to eat sushi.

Following sushi etiquette is important if you ever want to visit Japan — fortunately, this isn’t synonymous with using chopsticks. In fact, some types of sushi are best eaten using your hands, like nigiri. However, sashimi is always eaten with chop sticks and you should never use forks or knives with any type of sushi.

Also, there are certain times where dipping sushi in soy sauce is more appropriate. Dipping the fish part of nigiri sushi flavors it more directly, but dipping the rice part can cause the sushi to fall apart.

You’re also not supposed to mix your wasabi and soy sauce together. In many traditional sushi restaurants, the wasabi is already added inside and mixing wasabi with soy sauce will just ruin both of those flavors. Additionally, the ginger that comes along with the sushi is actually supposed to be a pallet cleanser in between pieces.

You’re also supposed to eat your sushi in one bite — which is becoming harder to do in the US because our portion sizes are larger than those overseas. Other etiquette tips include complimenting the chef on their sushi rice and not wearing too much perfume, as this is rumored to alter your pallet.

I can also contribute a tip: Don't shake off the excess soy sauce. "Shaking is for the toilet." <- actual quote from a Japanese sushi chef. 🤣

I've been in a sushi resto in japan before. Since I didn't know everything about eating a sushi, the sushi master told me to eat the sushi however I like and however I want. He also said its okay to eat it in portion or bites to know for myself if I like sushi or not. The master said that if I'm going to like the sushi, then I should try to learn the tradition of eating a sushi properly. Such a kind man. Maybe he noticed that I wasn't from Japan.

some of the examples used in this video were bad manners, such as shaking the sushi after dipping it in the soy sauce, don't do that if you want to "eat sushi correctly"

Something important to keep in mind that a superficial video like this does not touch on: there is a world of difference between most sushi found outside of Japan and higher quality sushi or Japanese sushi. It’s not a bad idea to use ginger to cover the flavor about for lower quality sushi.

This was all very interesting. And I'm still going to eat sushi exactly like they said not to.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to give up mixing wasabi in soy sauce. Can’t resist the way wasabi get soggy and tasty and how nicely it sticks to sushi afterwards.

Everything else about the rice, soy amount, and ginger makes a lot of sense to me and kinda came naturally to these habits.

I watch Japanese man mix wasabi and soy sauce all the time? Guess it's different strokes for different folks 😁👍

I think it diffes from person to person....

You CAN actually mix wasabi and soy sauce. I CAN and WILL dip my sushis in the soy sauce because I have never found a sushi that already has wasabi in it. Besides I enjoy it that way.

As someone who ate ginger on my sushi roll it was actually goo, but I was soon shamed for it 🤣 I didn’t know it was a palate cleanser

👍But I like the ginger & wasabi together and together with the sushi. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Who is eating the ginger with the sushi? If you have different pieces, it’s there to cleanse your palate so the taste won’t all run together.
