Luke looking at his prosthetic, realizing that he was effectively _becoming_ Darth Vader, is such an underrated moment

I still remember watching this for the first time. And I remember it made my blood run cold. That whole terrifying display of blind rage, the look of fury in Luke’s eyes, and that haunting John Williams score. It was like an emotional rollercoaster.

And it took a few repeat viewings to realize, that when Vader cried out at 1:49, that it wasn’t a scream of pain, but FEAR. And that gave me an even greater chill. Vader had spent the entirety of the trilogy instilling fear in everyone else, but to see him actually afraid himself?

Chills. Chills every time.

At 2:34, this is so interesting because it's possibly the only time we see Palpatine utterly defeated. After manipulating everyone he's ever encountered in his life successfully, he attempts to manipulate this young, barely trained Jedi, offers him ultimate power, and Luke can't be corrupted. Yeah Vader throws him down the shaft, yeah Rey blows him up in the idiotic sequels. This is his true defeat, his first encounter with someone who is immune to the dark side of the force.

We never hear Vader speak with such malice as we do when he says "sister, you have a twin sister" with this subdued sadistic glee. It's terrifying.

The sound of the lightsabers clashing at 1:18 is so cool

I saw this in the theater in 1983. I was 12. That was the most amazing movie experience of my life. The whole place was alive. No Star Wars film can compare to the original trilogy. The chemistry of the actors and the mystique is untouchable.

I like how Episode III parallels this with Anakin and Dooku. And instead of rejecting the dark side and not finishing off the Sith apprentice like Luke did here, Anakin did the opposite.

Hearing Vader literally gasp at 1:13 is one of my favorite things about this scene

If a Jedi survivor or Storm Trooper or an Inquisitor sees this, they will be like:

HOW THE HELL IS THIS KID ABLE TO BEAT VADER WHILE WE COULD'NT?!

And then Luke says:

I'm a Jedi, like my father before me...

1:48 "Aaaaah! Why did I let that damned medical droid talk me into the robot hand with the upgraded pain sensors?!"
2:24 "Gah! Look at this shit. It's still smoldering."

with this last bit of conflict, Luke avenged everyone who had suffered at the hands of the Sith: his mother, his sister (and her adoptive family and everyone on Alderaan and Jedha), his aunt, his uncle, his childhood friend, every Jedi who had either become an Inquisitor or died, his masters (Obi-Wan and Yoda), and finally his father who he showed compassion and empathy and showed that Anakin Skywalker was still around.

You can literally see the lightsabers in prop form in the shadows.
