Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

I definitely don't need to ingest that growth inhibitor. I'm short enough as it is.

I love your channel. Im in Mississippi USA. I've try to grow ginger for three years. This year was the first year that it grew! Weather has been
super hot. And grew! I have a bunch in three tubs. Thank you so much!!!

We always do it. Soak it in water, overnight. Wash it thoroughly under tap water while scrubbing it, then spread them out in sun for some time. Keeps ginger fresh for a longer time.

Thank you so much. I had no idea why my ginger was not growing. I will try this little trick. I will also start peeling my ginger because I juice Ginger and did not peel it so Thank you again for that little tip <3

If left in water in enclosed bottle, you can open the top slightly every few days and eventually you’ll get Ginger Ale - if left long enough it will ferment and you’ll get Ginger Wine. You won’t get beer - because you’ll need to add stuff to make the beer - but the fizzy Ale can be used to treat upset stomachs.

You're one of my favorite gardening YouTubers now. Just enough humor and I learn something new with each video. Great stuff man. Love what you're doing

My ginger has been growing for 6 or 7 months. I don't remember if I soaked it first but it is growing very well. Thank you for the info. Love your accent.

I was excited when you mentioned ginger beer. Then I was disappointed cause you were joking. Hahaha…. But this is funny timing because I’ve been soaking some chunks of ginger for a couple of weeks; I used them for tea and then I’ve been reinfusing them and the water continues to be flavorful and spicy. It’s awesome for green juices without the fibers that used to get caught in my teeth.
