I am so thankful I came across your channel. I've been having a hard time lately on getting clarity with what equipment I want to invest in. I just watched this video and your wireless microphone suggestion video, and they both have been so helpful. You make information easily accessible and clarifying without it being overwhelming. I'm excited about this new video journey I am about to take, and to upgrade my equipment and skills. I feel so much more confident after finding you and your tips!!

I am starting to really enjoy learning more about the tech side of YouTube so I'm glad I stumbled across your video :) My boyfriend got me the Canon G7X II for Christmas but I literally don't know how to do anything on it besides 'record' or take pictures! Thankfully it has the flip up screen - that! You're so knowledgable!

Do you have a set up you recommend for filming outside? What camera and mic? I'm concerned about the wind making noise.

Good tips Amanda! I’m looking to get started with video and bought my first DSLR last fall, a Canon T7i (via a beginner’s kit). I’m not really a video person, but wanted the option for bokeh (blurry backgrounds) and green screen. Beyond that, I want something as simple (point and shoot) as possible.

I did buy the “Nifty Fifty” lens also, but was NOT impressed when I tested it. I’m using the camera to shoot ONLY indoors and have limited space. The Nifty Fifty zoomed into my face WAY TOO CLOSE and showed every flaw. Blech! The kit 18-55 lens was much better for my purposes.

My biggest concern when buying the camera was AUDIO! I made sure to get a camera with an audio jack — and then spent MORE money on audio equipment than the camera. I’m shooting from home in a less-than-ideal acoustical environment. Mic input volume (direct to PC) and background noise (A/C, etc.) and mic hiss was a big problem. Altogether, I have a dynamic mic (the Audio-Technica ATR2100) and an omnidirectional Audio-Technica AT899 XLR lav mic, plus two audio interfaces (one is XLR to USB for my PC, the other is for my Canon T7i) and the DBX 286s mix processor. The DBX 286s is the magic equipment that greatly reduces the background noise and mic hiss. Love that thing!

It took quite a bit of research and testing to arrive at this setup and I’m super happy with it. 😊

Amanda, curious if you have a second to chime in on APSC crop sensor vs full frame? I just got a canon T7i a couple months ago admittedly for many uses, amateur photography being one of them but video of myself kind of like this vlog style being another. Now my girlfriend who’s a professional dancer is experimenting more with dance film and I’m trying to help her document etc.. but another professional videographer she worked with said “oh don’t shoot dance with an APSC” I think it was something to do with amount of AF points? Anyway is that not really a factor for this kind of blogging style thing or is it something I should be concerned about?
