Honestly one of the most chilling moments in the series. No, these are not misunderstood humans who just happen to be wearing horns. This is a truly monstrous species that only mimics human appearance and speech as both a survival mechanism and a hunting tool. They are “inhuman” in the truest definition of the word, which makes them actually kind of unnerving as a species

Everyone talking about how refreshingly evil the demons are, i’m just chilled by Himel’s quiet defeated “no…” as if he wanted to believe in the demon so badly, but that ideal was shattered. Heartbreaking.

What I love about this anime is that it defined demons in a clear way beyond any other anime with demons. Their personality, how the rank each other, their individual magic, but most of all how and why they use language. To me this is the best type of demon race ive seen in any format.

It's very interesting to see a demon – something that is usually portrayed as a ruthless, selfish soul who lacks empathy – actually getting the treatment they deserve instead of them trying to be more... human, for lack of a better term.

Honestly, this demon girl's explanation of how her kind thinks makes my blood run cold.

Frieren is one of the coldest characters I have ever seen in Anime. By "cold", I don't mean she kills other people for the lulz. Her sense of reason is so direct, it leaves no room for emotions to interfere.

This take on demons feels somewhat…refreshing? I’m so used to the humanization of demons in anime that seeing them as true monsters with no empathy feels like a new take on this fantasy race, even tho they were originally depicted like that.

There's something so chilling about this depiction of demons as a race of almost entirely apathetic creatures who know how to manipulate feelings with words but are incapable of such feelings themselves, and such concepts as "family" and "love" are so alien to them that they can't even hope to fully understand what they are beyond using them as a means to an end. The flashback this clip comes from only adds to that. It leads us to believe that redemption is possible for this demon through a brief montage only to pull the rug out from under us by showing the horrific aftermath, confirming Frieren was right to be suspicious and untrusting of the demon because of what the elf mage knew about her kind.

Someone said this in another video, but the thought that she learned that word and phrase from the kid she killed, probably her last words, is the most chilling thought. The poor mother

Right before this is one of the only times we see Himmel in anger. He did ask Frieren to spare the demon at first, and that mercy led to 2 civilians dying and left a little girl an orphan.

Demons in this setting are like psychopath serial killers. Highly intelligent and manipulative, but they completely lack empathy and are incapable of love.

It's an interesting concept. In classical literature, alchemists like Dr. Faustus raised demons using special words to protect themselves from the Demons' wrath. And so the Demons use special words to protect themselves from human wrath.

I was actually sympathizing with the demon here for a moment.

I actually thought that maybe an accjdent caused the fire in house and village chief died in fire. So the demon may have saved his daughter and escaped. Now the villagers will misunderstand that the demon sabotaged the village chief and all. I really thought the demon started to change.

Imagine my surprise after watching this scene.

This show really caught me off guard right then and there. Brilliant.

😂Jeezus. "Yeah we act like kids and call out mama, just to eff with you. Make you hesitate, or feel bad for attacking us. Cry... beg for our lives, some of us go all out. Because you're all dumdums. It's dope... Watch!"

In most of the more recent stuff the "demons" are almost always misunderstood nice guys, but here they are unrepentantly evil jerks. It's sort of refreshing to see a story with demons that are actually worthy of being called such.
