She was scolded by the bystanders that she didn't cry. She ends up being the only one of Himmel's party to cry.

Mfer had us in tears only after 20 minutes of knowing him, he was there and then he wasn't, not even 1/100th of our lifespan within this one episode

0:46, As sad as her realizing she missed an opportunity to truly connect with him for he passed, it’s sweet seeing the other two beside her silently comforting her without even needing to be prompted to.

It’s sad how it took too long for her to realize that he was special to her…even if she still isn’t aware of it, it’s pretty evident with how he replaces her master as most important person, how she keeps learning new spells because he liked it etc. that he left a greater impact in her with “measly 10 years” than most people in her long life

I love the fact the the studio decided not to put any background music on this scene. It makes you feel like you are part of the story and that his death is not something to romantisized about. It alos helps to feel that the reality is sinking in for Frieren.

“Don’t pat my head” hits different when the series later explains the importance of head pats to Frieren.

I think I might binge this show. Very rarely does an anime make me tear up, but just hearing the genuine pain in Frieren's voice coupled with her requesting those to not console her... It's brilliant.

This scene was crazy, cause it had me in tears for a character I barely knew. And that is a product of amazing writing, sound design, voice acting, and production!

I really love how silent this moment is. It makes it feel a lot more realistic.

the reality is even if she spent 30 years with him, it would be the same for her, 10 years is nothing to her life time. This show really helps me understand the ageless characters who are like "your life is so short."

No music, no distractions, just raw emotion

I always thought this was Frieren saying two things at once.

10 Years to her isn't that much time at all, because she's so long lived. She thought she had all the time in the world for things.
and...
10 Years was not enough time for her to get to know everything she wanted to know about him. It was too short, and she should have made an effort to learn more.

I've also been thinking that Himmel knew how she felt about him and a lot of his antics weren't about him. I think he wanted to leave so many statues of himself for her. So that he would always be with her. No matter where she went. And, she wouldn't feel lonely. And, she could remember him. I don't think he cared one bit about the world remembering him at all. I think what he cared most about was Frieren and making sure that when he was gone, she would remember him. He knew she would go back to those places they had been. Either for prior obligations or because she'd eventually turn up there anyway. So, in as many of those places as he could, he got a statue of himself made. For her.

And, hey, it's these statues that often spur her to action. She plants a field of his favorite flowers around one of them. She saves a few towns from their troubles that have his statue in them. She starts a new quest and journey with a new party in a town with his statue... all to see him.

And, maybe, that's also why he made the statues. So, she didn't have to go where she's going to see him.

I think it's interesting how Frieren, despite saying she knew barely knew him, is actually one of the people who knew Himmel the best (probably second to Heiter who was a childhood friend). During her next adventure almost all of her decisions are made by the principle "That's what Himmel would have done". When he meets Einsam, the demon uses Himmel's ghost and the ghost (probably based on Frieren's memories) behaves exactly how the real one would have done. Frieren doesn't really regret not knowing Himmel well:she regrets not having created more memories with him.
When Heiter is going to die as well and he wants that Fern go away before his death, to avoid her experiencing the lost of someone again, she scolded him and she tells that Fern needs more loving memories with him. The memories she hadn't had with Himmel.

Frieren is easily right up there with Vinland Saga and Pluto as one of my favorite anime of the year!

Frieren's first episode is a great emotional epilogue to one journey and the start of another.

Don't ever take loved ones for granted. I just lost my grandmother a few days ago, so I speak from experience.
