Bonus tip: design the character in a chibi form but with as much complexity as you intend the normal version to have.
If you cannot fit in details beyond a certain point, then those details are too complicated for it. It's not so much that this keeps the design simple, but more that it keeps you from overdesigning into something that's hard for you to redraw or remember. Obviously there will be exceptions and I can't force anyone to do this and nobody is legally or morally obligated to do this, etc., I'm just sharing what I've found that works for me. In my experience, this prevents me from overcomplicating a design and appreciate the simple aspects of said design and work to bring out more of their potential. This video reminded me of that and inspired me to share this in case it helps others too.
