GoPro Hero 6 Black Review | 30 Days In

So Here is my 30 days in review of the GoPro Hero 6 Black. I like to hold off on doing full reviews or giving thoughts on a product like this until I have had good ample amount of time to use is it in a manor that I normally would. I have been using it for 30 days and now feel like I am ready to give my thoughts on the new Hero 6 Black.

The holiday season is fast approaching and if your wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to the Hero 6 or maybe you are going to be purchasing your very first GoPro and not sure whether to go with the Hero 5 black or the Hero 6 black, my review will offer some interesting insights.

My biggest complaint with the Hero 6 Black is that the high performance setting like 1080/120 and 4k/60 are recorded in the H.265 format. My older computer and editing software can't handle these files. If you upgrade to the Hero 6 you'll need to run your videos through the HANDBRAKE app to convert them to H.264 or upgrade your computer and editing software as well (if you want to use the high performance settings).

Unfortunately the updates you want can't happen due to hardware restrictions. Stabilization at 4K 60fps is beyond the processing power at the moment. As for the linear 4K the amount of crop required to get the linear would result in less than the 4K amount of pixels used. They could scale it back up like some other brands but they would be false to call it 4K and are honest about it.

Try to change from NTSC to PAL to use phone app without preview issues.

Good to see that the footage can just be sent to family and friends without doing any post processing. I ended up getting rid of my Hero 5 Black because you always had to do some post processing for it to look nice. Lens flaring is a lens issue and no firmware can fix that. Same problem with the 4k 60 fps, the hardware (in this case the processor) of the gopro doesn't allow for stabilization at that resolution. Thanks for the review as it solidified my choice to get the Sony X-3000 over this (older model but it's cheaper to get now). It may not have 60 fps but the 30 fps, stabilization and night shooting of the Sony still can't be matched or beat by GoPro.

Sight is limited to sensor size, 4k just works in wide, because zooming in, will cause less pixels being used, it has no optical zoom. Firmware update wont help, hardware limitations in place sadly.

While its "only" 100 dollars more in the US, i.e. a 25 per cent increase, here in Europe the price difference is substantially more. In Norway the Hero6 is 50 per cent more expensive! In euro currencies (i.e. Germany) there usually is a difference of 42 per cent more.

I love the colour over saturation & the new HEVC codec which some might not like, does it record video in HDR? Stabilization would have been nice at 4K 60fps but I guess you can't win them all, I use my GoPro Hero 6 primarily for home movies & out door excursions so don't even use a gimbal . I find the Quik smartphone app really useful for quick editing & sharing footages, the GoPro Hero 6 Black is well constructed & even more convenient to carry around than my smartphone which I never thought possible for a functional camera.
