Today on The Everyday Dad we're going to check out the brand new camera from GoPro the Hero 6 Black! But what I really want you to think during this video is seriously why would you but the Hero 6? Its a pretty pricey camera for what it is and if you don't need the 4k 60fps maybe there is a better option out there for you.

Great for water sports, fishing, pool time videos, and water parks... Summer FUN sports action camera with no case needed or muffled low hard to hear sounds that go with those cases.

What about the much improved color, low light and better dynamic range?

So if I'm not overly concerned about 4K, will the Hero 5 do just as well? I have a gimbal for handheld image stabilization, and for the most part my Hero 3+ is still working for my forward camera, and my Fly 6[v] for the rear. Most of what I do is cycling video.

Have you had any issues with any of your Yi cameras so far?
Would you recommend the GoPro hero 5 black if I wouldn't be using the stabilization and just using it for the video quality or is there something better?

I've been using 1 canon g7x & 3 sjcam4000's for like 3 years now mounted on a Samson MK-10 boom mic using their frame mount + a 1/4 male to female thread - And they still work fine (though I don't know if one is a fake or not, but it still works lol) BUT, one of my cameras gave out on me the other day..

I think I've narrowed it down to these, but if you know something else that would fit my needs better Please let me know. Cuz if the one I get is way better than my Sjcam's then I might get 2 more (so, cost is a factor)

GoPro Hero 5 Black refurbished = $220 each ($170 after $50 trade in for my sjcam4000)
Yi-4K (not 4K+) = $150 from their website...but no trade in offered.
*I do like that the GoPro Hero 5 Black has the Linear mode (cuz fish eye looks weird on drums)
**I also use Screenflow 7, if that makes a difference with those 2 cameras above.

These will be for YouTube drum videos, SO...
1. I don't really need stabilization (unless it will help with #6)
2. I don't really need 4k either actually..
3. I'll be shooting in 1080p 30fps, MAYBE 60fps (if I feel like it would look cool)
4. The cameras will be on a Samson MK-10 boom stand using their frame mounts + GoPro Tripod adaptor.
5. I don't need the audio to be great (I get my audio edited)
6. I've noticed my bass drum does cause the video to shake with my Canon G7X (1st one, not mark 2), but that could just be because it's heavy while attached to my boom stand.
7. BUT they will be in low light. I use 2 neewer 176 LED lights, black background on my walls, no other lights on.

Thoughts? 🤔🤔
Thanks in advance! 😊

Its 2.7k 120 and 1080/240 footage is in a class of its own in cameras of this form factor. That alone makes it no question. Also, the comment about "if you want full control of the image then you should be looking at a different camera" doesn't make sense. Sure if you want that and can afford the physical size of a bigger camera, but that's the whole point of good action cameras. The hero 6 has full iso control and shutter speed control along with a fairly flexible flat color mode. That makes it far easier to integrate with a production using other professional grade cameras. You aren't sticking a full camera rig on someone's helmet or on the outside of a car. We'll see how the RX0 does, but limited to 1080/60 internally is not helping its case.

So, significantly better EIS than any other action camera, better manual controls, flat color mode and slow motion 120/240 that holds up incredibly well (Look up Nurk FPV and watch his "First day with the hero 6" video, its awesome.). I guess my mind was made up when I got mine.

Lol at 5:30 it seemed like you were talking live on the GoPro. Which you do later on in the video.

I have a Hero 3 White at the moment and while it's served me well from my first couple of years on Youtube, it'd be nice to upgrade to 4K. I am going to look into the difference between 60 FPS and 30 FPS because if I don't need 60, I'd probably go with the helmet friendlier Hero5 Session. It's really too bad the microphone accessory is overpriced and oversized, I know you've recommended a separate voice recorder before but I feel like combining an audio and video track is going to further deter me from editing my videos on a regular basis. However I only use my GoPro for special recordings like motorcycle reviews and rely on my Sena Prism Tube day to day otherwise which I still need to review.

The not saving videos issue would really suck though, if I'm done a day of test rides and get home and find out I have no footage, that would be disastrous.

What do u think about phones? Like the Sony phones that have stabilization and 4k? Is the GOpro that much better? (sry about the double post lol)

The audio from that Sony really sounds more muffled than the GoPro. GoPro's audio has been pretty good, even in the Hero5. It's not perfect, and the Hero5's audio issues are due to the microphones being too sensitive rather than muffled. It sounds like they reduced some of the audio gain in the Hero6, or perhaps just didn't add any gain compared with the Hero5 (I'm not sure which it is).

Auto rotation doesn’t work and my videos are being recorded upside down, 4K recording is very grainy, YouTube doesn’t even support anything over 60fps. And GoPro tech support is pretty useless not to mention the language barrier and they can’t even understand your issue to resolve any issues.

Hey Pops. I searched for GoPro processor specs, and found an article that has ripped your video off exactly, that or you read their article word for word. Ha. Titled: "Should You buy Gopro Hero 6 for $500???" from Tec Zeen.
Anywho, call it internet fame when your content gets duped. Good work.
Any buzz on GoPro 7's or are they in suspended animation for a while?

It's got problems. You can plug it in to charge; however, four hours later the light saying it's charging is still on. I also noted you have to stop recording before the battery dies cuz when it dies while recording the camera freezes up and it's pop da battery out time if you wanna charge it....

The stabilization is the only thing that’s got me considering going from the 4 to the 6.

Ultimately, I decided to use the same money and upgrade to a Pixel 2. Even better video and optically stabilized. I wasn't super happy with the hero6 in my testing. Terrible low light and the EIS looked jerky.

Your voice sound higher pitch on the sony voice mic test than gopro. Also go seemed to have more bass. I thought was just me but ivlisten again with headphones and now a third time i put it through my old home stereo and sure enough the bass frequency move morebon gopro but mid abd highs go higher on sony. Were they both adjust to same mic gain?

How about setting up the 6 with an external mic setup and the gimbal? Is there such a combo such as with your Feiyu 5?!

Greetings,

I would like to get the best video quality, without any curvature, fish-eye, warping, etc, on the edges.

I see in the on-line manual that there are a few resolutions where you can choose "linear".
Is the recording quality compromised, in any way, by choosing linear? Any loss of color or detail?

Thank you.

This seems better for head mounts being attached to the front of the head rather on the side of the head where your head would block some of the view.

Video is fantastic but for photographic use don't expect it to even out perform a flagship smartphone, I use the GoPro Hero 6 Black mainly for recording videos because of 4K 60fps & superb image stabilization. The videos are vibrant, sharp & with a wide range of settings, but I wished it could have perform better with taking photos to the standard of smartphones at this price level.
