GoPro HERO6 Black First Ride Review

After months of speculation, GoPro’s latest and greatest camera, the hotly anticipated Hero 6, has landed in our grubby mitts.

Good info! GoPro video is my life and the sound still seems to be subpar, so it's still Hero4 black for me.

There is actually 3 dilemmas. The one you forgot is that the GoPro Hero 4 is still an amazing camera and the one I'll be sticking with so should you buy one? Look, I would guess that most people just record fun videos and post them to social media. The GoPro Hero4 is wonderful and does it all as far as I'm concerned. I totally love new gear and gadgets, but it's very hard to beat a GoPro Hero4 Silver and a nice gimbal. I'm also a HUGE FAN of the Session! I put the thing all over my bike! It takes great video and is super simple. If you're interested, I just produced a pretty nice video talking about action camera placement on my channel. Finally, you really didn't talk about sound and the reviews I'm getting in all seem to say the sound is still pretty bad :-(

Best overview for the hero 6 black that I've seen so far.

My biggest beef with the Hero 6 is the fact that I still get terrible audio on an Evo SS gimbal like on the hero 5. In your video the audio sounded very muffled as well, was it in a case?

I used GoPro 3, 3+ Black and 4. I recently got the new Sony AS300 Action Cam. Hands down way better image stabilization, battery life, sound and picture quality. The only thing that I miss about my GoPro is the shape and all the mounts. I don't use a gimbal and my videos are super smooth now with the Sony. GoPro needs to ditch their digital image stabilization, it warps the picture on the sides. Also GoPro's sound is crap and so is the battery life.

I have the five and it's so so good for bike footage. More of a road rider but still so good. Always go with the chest mount though. Nice but not enough extra features to warrant getting the upgrade. Can you use an external mic with this one?

Can record in 4k60p, they don't even upload the video in 60 frames for any format, good job.

Because of video stabilization it's worth it. That is the #1 problem with most peoples videos

I am guessing the Hero6 has the same problem as every other gopro for those of us in endurance sports and that is the poor battery life, they seem to make great improvements in every other aspect but they still can't handle an average bike ride without having to stop and change batteries.

They should've added the built in stabilizer that the Sony FDR-3000 has.

Hey BikeRadar... Great review!  One question .... were you using any type of external gimbal stabilization in the footage taken in this video or was this ONLY the hero 6 stabilization?

I run a Hero5 with an Evo SS. It has done wonderful on picture quality with Protune on. I was hoping the sound thing was fixed, but it sounds like it is still an issue. Maybe on the Hero 7! :-)

GoPro has since acknowledged that the crop is 10%, not 5%.
