I’m Samoan, my grandma makes banana poi as a drink. I heard the taro version isn’t that great but Hawaiians seem to love it lol

Depending on the thickness, you use fingers. Really thick is 1 finger, and thinner is 2 😊 my family always makes poi, and majority of us like it in a denser form more than watery

This was super helpful! There is a Hawaiian restaurant chain near me that has poi on the menu but the description says "if you have to ask, you probably won't like it" :( & the servers unfortunately have no idea either lol I think it sounds delicious now tho! This is totally something I would eat! THANK YOU AGAIN! 😁 Gonna go get some poi! ❤️

I've never had it, but sounds amazing. I live in California so anything that isn't 'American' is very, very expensive.

If you ever have a chance, I suggest trying poi with a little bit of milk and sugar. My grandmother would make this for as a sweet treat growing up.

Poi is so underrated!! I prefer it way less fermented but the texture is amazing.

I usually eat poi with pork, but my grandma used to add it as a side with a bowl of spam, rice, and a fried egg

Not all poi is fermented. Some people leave it out to become sour poi(fermented). Lots of people enjoy fresh poi.

I’ve been to Hawaii and it’s quite delicious especially paired with savory foods like Janelle explains in the short

when you say some have more of a fermented taste than others, is there any other way you would be able to describe that? i can’t quite imagine what a “fermented” taste is 🤔 do you just mean more sour or is it more than that? (but this was so interesting to learn about! i definitely thought it’d be used for sweet things based on its appearance haha) also… first? 👀😂

Here in the Cordillera Region Philippines, we have binuburan (ferminted cassava).

Poi is one of the only Hawaiian foods I love to eat that most are off put. So ono and yes the flavors can mature but it doesn’t last that long at our house. Much love from Hawaii. Aloha

I like the fresh taro poi that isn't aged.
I like to use a wide, deep spoon that is short handled. It sort of approximates having a scoop in the front of your hand as if eating it with the hand. I like it with pork or fish.

Thank you for this! I have been too intimidated to try it. I am definitely partaking the next time I visit friends in Hawaii.
