Florida deputy saves baby’s life after mom involved in crash with motorcyclist

A Florida deputy is being credited for saving the life of a six-month-old after a deadly crash involving a motorcyclist on Feb. 8, 2024.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office released details and dramatic body- and dash-camera footage from the crash scene.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., Sgt. Dave Musgrove of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office saw a motorcyclist speed past him at an estimated 100+ mph in Englewood. Seconds later, the sheriff's office says the motorcycle collided with a car at the intersection of S. McCall Road and Regina Drive.

The motorcyclist had been thrown from his bike and was "wedged into the rear window on the driver's side of the vehicle." Inside the car was a mother and two children, including an infant. According to the sheriff's office, the motorcyclist's body had landed on top of the infant. In bodycam footage, you can hear the fear and desperation in the mother's voice as she begged for help.

"My baby! I need my baby!" the woman yelled during the chaos.

Sgt. Musgrove then got to work rescuing who he could.

He first removed a small child from her booster seat in the back seat. He flagged someone down for help so they could hold the child while he went to rescue the infant, the sheriff's office said.

The baby survived, and the deputy was recognized for his actions ❤ some of the tv news page article: "One of them, 6-month-old Lola, had no pulse and wasn’t breathing until Musgrove performed CPR and revived her.

This week, Musgrove reunited with the family, two weeks after Lola was released from the hospital.

“We call him ‘Uncle Dave’ now, the girls do. He is our guardian angel, ” the infant’s mother said.

Even before the rescue, it turns out the family had a special connection with the deputy.

The motorcyclist died after crashing into the drivers side of the car. 6 month old baby Lola was in the hospital for 2.5 weeks and suffered some pretty severe injuries. She is now recovering at home with her 3 year old sister and mom ☺️ Sgt. Musgroves is keeping tabs on the family and the daughter calls him “Uncle Dave.”

UPDATE: Baby Lola was released from the hospital just days ago and her first stop was to see Deputy Sgt David Musgrove, her knight in shining uniform. He visited her in the hospital frequently through the month of February to check on her. She still has a long road to recovery but she is alive and doing well!

Baby is OK. She had multiple injuries including skull fractures. Was in the hospital for 2.5 weeks, but is back home and smiling. Has some more recovering to do, but she's OK! The officer visited the hospital often and is now Uncle Dave to the girls.

Update: Baby Lola recovered and is back home with Mom and older sister. Officer stayed in touch and they have coined him Uncle Dave! My heart goes out to the Mom who had just lost her fiancé, the girls dad recently. Thank god she didn’t have to say goodbye to anyone else!
