“There’s nothing we did for Deputy Hobbs that he wouldn’t do for us.” To have the respect of the inmates like that instead of fear or hatred. It’s an amazing accomplishment.

The deputy reaped what he sowed. He treated the inmates like human beings and they acted from their humanity.

And this is how people are rehabilitated. Treat them like humans.

Thank you. I'm one of the inmates that helped save Deputy Hobbs. I finally got released a month ago. I'm glad to be free and honored to be labeled as a HERO. I'm doing very well. I could spend 30min telling you everything positive I've accomplished since my release and less than 30 seconds telling you the negative. So. I'm doing AWESOME and hope Deputy Hobbs is still doing good. Thank you, Terry Loveless

The fact that he opened their doors shows a lot of trust and understanding

My husband worked in corrections as an officer for five years. He always treated the inmates with respect whereas some didn’t. One night he was in the gym and told an inmate to stop throwing the ball so that it would go up and hit the lights. All my husband had for protection was a radio and a flashlight. That inmate came over and got all up on him threatening him. The other inmates came and formed a circle around him until help came. They told him they always had his back.
The other thing was, we’d be in Walmart or somewhere and person that had been in there, more than a few times, would see us and start talking to him and telling him how they were doing and thanked him for what a good guy he was to them.
I’m proud of him. He’s a really good guy with a good heart.

The fact that these 3 prison inmates are kinder than most people I know, is just sad. (No disrespect to the inmates, these guys are true heros.)

I was a prison officer and I can attest that most of the time they aren't bad people, they made bad decisions. Their background can be wildly varied, but the main thing to remember is to treat them as people and respect them. I stood up in front of the governor a few times to testify on an inmates behalf if I felt they were being unfairly accused of rule breaking, or they were peripheral to an incident. I've been caught in a couple of riots and had inmates let me out of the area so I didn't get hurt because "He's one of the good ones guys". It wasn't my place to judge them on their crimes, that was done by the courts. Treat people with respect and fairness and you never know when it will be returned to you when you need it most.

There is probably a good reason why the inmates are willing to help him. This officer has obviously been good to the inmates.

the fact that the officer trusted them and opened their door, and they didn't even hesitate on helping him really shows how you receive what you give

For those keeping track, he had a heart attack and was out recovering for several weeks and when he came back, all the prisoners clapped.

Something that amazes me so much: The prison guard trusted the inmates so much, he let them out and knew they'd help him.

Edit, for a little more clarity:
My point was, respect goes a long way. If the same guard had treated them like animals, they'd have left him to die, that's all there was to it. Trying to escape doesn't really make sense either and I wasn't implying that :)

being a prison officer and being loved by the inmates is probably the most bad ass thing. I wouldnt mess with that officer cuz he has a lot of body guards

Whatever these men did, they didn't lose their humanity. Hats off to them.

"He's a wonderful man and a good officer, we can't for him to get back to work." wow that's beautiful, has me crying

Deputy Hobbs treated the inmates with respect and when he had an emergency the inmates saved his life. God bless you all.

The officer showed kindness to the inmates and therefore they showed kindness in return. It’s truly amazing how far a little bit of kindness can go in this world.

I think people forget that these people are human beings. Breaking the law doesn't mean someone is a monster or has no humanity in them.
I'm proud of these guys for helping!

Just cause people make life mistakes, doesn't mean they are bad people. Kudos to the inmates for still being great people.
