It's good advice to put in the effort, but some companies try to maintain information assymetry and even try to pass laws that prevent negative information from getting out. And of course who do you trust? Companies are free to put out positive stories about themselves under the guise of the free press. It's incredibly difficult to find trustworthy sources of information.

What is interesting is how much people avoid putting in the effort to make good decisions. As tired as we all are of politics, one cannot avoid the conclusion that voters don't always put the effort in to make good decisions at the ballot box. So Ackoff's discovery has implications for all aspects of our lives. Despite access to information being virtually free, modern life conspires against devoting time and effort to increasing our circle of competence in any area. People don't choose to see themselves as being limited in anyway to make decisions, but sadly, the consequences tell a different story. Why? On the one hand, trust in expertise has fallen because there are no neutral sources. We are bombarded with news reports, press releases, and reports that are following their own agenda. Who can we trust? All the sources of information seem to be either compromised because of their funding, or their affiliation, so what is the ordinary person to do? Fear (or emotion) can then tend to trump facts. Indeed "shooting the messenger" can often be the consequence even when the message is objectively true but emotion holds sway in the audience. Like all constructive and positive messages this video is sowing its seed - some will fall on fertile ground. Some will fall on barren ground, and others be eaten by the birds. I hope there is an abundance of fertile minds willing to make the effort to make better decisions, because we will all benefit from that.
