I think dealing with the anxiety around decision making comes down to admitting that there is a maximally correct decision, but you cannot know what it is. The choices you make define you, so just decide who you want to be and if you in good faith make decisions towards that goal then that's it, man. Gotta wade through the mire, climb up into the lair and slay the dragon, roughly speaking.

There's a hypothesis here I would like to challenge, to the effect that chaos tolerance is a learnt ability. I love chaos and thinking on my feet, but I was never taught that as a child. I was kept in a very choiceless and controlled environment and wasn't encouraged to believe I could make good decisions or handle the world (quite the reverse, I was deemed incompetent and stupid). I think, at least in my case, my love of chaos is temperamental. I always enjoyed the thrill of the stress that comes with uncertainty and I get bored when everything goes according to plan. My baseline is being bored, so maybe it could account for that. Even as a kid, I enjoyed doing presentations in front of the class, not because I wasn't scared, I was a shy kid and I was terrified, but because at least I wasn't bored half to death.

The way Jordan is completely immersed in the conversation is something else.

I think there's something to be said about having your options narrowed because it makes the thought process much less complicated. If you have too much choice, you're probably bound to buyer's remorse when you do make a decision because you're gonna constantly be trying to retrace your steps to determine if the decision you made was maximally beneficial.

Procrastinating down to the wire can also bring about opportunity to witness others reactions. Those who can influence a particular decision may be holding out till the last minute before reaching deeper into their pocketbook. Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler” may be this guys lifelong theme song.

I was at Petersons lecture in Bergen, Norway tonight. Definitely recommend the beyond order tour for anyone who is interested!

But it goes deeper still:
It's not just a question of what you choose our when you choose it, but also why do you feel as though you have to choose in the first place?
A coin flip would reduce the anxiety and uncertainty down to 0.
And in many ways, if we spend weeks overthinking multiple choices what ends up happening is that when the time comes to finally make the decision, we make a snap judgement. And we are never certain no matter how long we thought things through. Because certainty is not a product of good decision making, but of trust. Not of choosing right over wrong, but proving your choice right after the fact.
We never do have control over our lives; but we can have control over ourselves and our attitudes towards life.

There are no good outcomes in life, only good actions taken to unknown outcomes.

The right decision is the one that is right AT THE TIME, based on a careful review of all information AT THAT TIME. If after the passage of events it turns out that another option was better, then you follow the Stoics in understanding that you cannot control most things which are external to your mind including future events, and acceptance rather than regret is the rational response.
a side note : who is this interesting man talking with JP ? We are not told !

I found this incredibly helpful as I work through processing and improving my indecisiveness and where it comes from ….(anxiety!!).

5:50 I beg to differ; I was in that situation when I got out of high school, I applied to 3 schools, 3 faculties each, and got accepted in them all --the problem only became larger, I really didn't know what to do and ended up making the wrong decision back then.

5:39 Yup. That’s a common problem common folk do have. Very often. All the time, in fact.

Yes the time domain matters most I've discovered as well. Timing is more impactful or just as impactful as the choice

Questions to ask: “When is the best time to make this decision?” “When do I have to decide?”
“When should I do it?”

JP’s Advice: “Don’t close the door, before it is necessary to close the door.”

Have more faith in your ability to dance with life and juggle it’s situations.

Thank you Dr. I should learn to be quiet but I'm not sure I have the capacity. Good day

4:48 Imagine having a colleague or boss like this chap 😱
‘Where is boss today?’
🤷🏻‍♀️ ‘Fuck knows. Maybe Tokyo. Maybe later. Maybe never’.

Being a supervisor at work, I always enjoyed a challenge. My colleagues would whinge and moan when something went wrong..

There has been times in my life when I had to make a big decision without any time to think about it. I just had to make a quick pivot. Fortunately everything turned out well … so far anyway.

Making premature decisions or trying to is my issue. I did not get this before but I try to iron down the possibilities to help myself feel certain before a decision needs to be made when really I could just start investigating the options and see what unfolds
