it is very important to say that most of the voluteers that participated in Greek Revolution were from Germany. Very few Englishmen participated in the war and very few of them supported the revolution in the beginning. Britain as State supported Greeks only after 1823 when their public opinion supported Greeks and the death of lord Byron. As for the language it is logiacla to have evolution through thousands of years plus other effects of other nations throughout history. (Slavic, Albanians, Turks).

One time a Dutch librarian tried to speak ancient greek to me and I didn't understand a word. Then she told me it's a phrase from Odyssey and after I told her to point me to this phrase I read the text clear and properly to her - the reason the guerillas didn't understand the british is because of their accent and judging by dutch librarian wrong punctuation too.

The way non-Greeks pronounce ancient Greek makes no sense even to modern day Greeks who have studied the language. Accenting is way off and also in ancient (as well as modern) Greek letters are frequently combined into one sound, whereas non-Greeks usually pronounce them as two sounds. Not at all surprising that the Greeks at the time of the revolution wouldn’t have made sense at all of Brits reciting ancient verse to them…
