It's finally here, Canon's first Full Frame Mirrorless camera. In this video I attend the launch event in Sydney and share with you my initial thoughts both positive and negative. The review (if you can call it that) starts around the 4 minute mark. Let me know your thoughts on this camera in the comments! Thanks for watching, Matt.

Happy with what I've got, but looking forward to all the reviews.

Good to see you back at work with a camera.

Hey Mat, I really appreciate all the great videos that you're making, and all the hard work you're putting on this channel. I am (still) a Canon user since I started photography 10 years ago.

I usually don't comment, just enjoy your videos, but now I just want to point out that yes, this is a revolutionary camera, IF you're not seeing what everybody else is doing and the products that they are releasing.

Sony A7SII was released in 11 September 2015, and has much better video capabilities that this first R model released 3 YEARS LATER (except megapixels, but in video we care about the 4K, not the 30MP). 3 Years ago Sony released that camera that can shoot with 25000 ISO with no noise in very low light. My best friend has an A7SII since day 1 it was released, and also switched from Canon to Sony on video. DID NOT had any issues with the camera, it hold out in very bad situations. For video is the workhorse that you need and will never disappoint.

This is just one example. YES they (Sony) have their flaws, but with Sony A7III they listened to their users and fixed most of their flaws. And nobody cares about the pinkie, you can get a grip and don't loose the pinkie anymore ... c'mon.

In a couple of days Sony will release A7SIII with 4k - 60fps, non cropped (rumoured). In how many years we will have that on a Canon?
Even Nikon released better mirrorless cameras... I feel very disappointed with this release, again, AS A CANON USER FOR ALL MY LIFE.

Cheers,
Alex

So stoked you love your 6Dmkii. Spending that money was scary but after a months use I’m rapped!
Hope the recovery is going well 👍

I’ll probably preorder the EOS R. I’ve held back from adopting a mirrorless system up until now because of my investment in my Canon lenses. I was very happy to see that I’ll be able to seamlessly adapt my existing Canon lenses to this new system. Thanks for the video.

Nicely balanced review with a calming message to all those who jump to conclusions.
I was hoping for more 4K support but I'm willing to try it.Thanks MV! How's the hand coming?

I am a canon fan but I recently switched. I am happy I did but I do really like what canon did. But it is still lacking in the areas I need. But they definitely took a step in the right direction and I can’t wait to see what their next step is.

Glad to hear you're back properly :) and what a way to come back.. with a new Canon System! I always been a Canon shooter, I'm not sure what I think of mirrorless yet, but I won't be jumping to it just yet anyway... maybe after a few versions of them and a proper flagship introduced.. exciting times coming up :)

I'm pretty happy with this new camera and system! For me it is what the 6D Mark II should have been, especially on the video side. For photos now every camera is perfect. What matters now is video and the fact that they put Canon-Log without an additional fee of 500 dollars/euros, at 8 or even 10 bit is awesome. Also the adapters are very cool, especially the drop-in with the variable ND filter! That is something really really huge: it means that we can use all the EF lenses (perhaps also third party, which I own) with their lenshoods in broad daylight with an universal filter. For me that is huge.

The only two downsides are the fact that still for 2000$/€ there is still stigma that a full-frame is an "entry level" so it has only one card slot (while on APS-C they put two: look at 7D Mark I and II, or even the Nikon D500) and the still big crop in 4k, however that makes use lose the wide angle. But if we deliver in FullHD, it's not a very big of a deal, but still, would have been nicer if it wasn't there.

Overall I'm excited for the future and I wonder if we will ever see an APS-C with an R mount. Also on an italian newspaper there was an interview with Europe Canon president that said that Canon thought about changing in 2011.

Down to earth and no bullshit, good job Mat :)

No kidding man. People go nuts over specs. They also don't realized that there are millions more casual users out there like myself than there are professional photographers. I preordered mine. The user experience is better for me with a canon than with any other brands.

Well done man! Glad to have you back. You mentioned getting dirt in the sensor, but I did see on another video where it has a new flap or door that goes over the sensor as soon as you remove a lens. That should help and hopefully a feature they’ll use that on other canon lines too.

I will wait for their 1DX2 Mirrorless equivalent. This EOS R feels more like their entry level model.

Great vid, Matthew! I’m a Canon shooter, but have no intention—at least not now—of getting this camera, but just as an aside, the Sony a7iii does magnificently with Canon lenses and the Sigma MC 11 adapter.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and you are absolutely right about the 6DII, it is an amazing camera, only those who own it know. The abuse my 6DII got in Iceland was almost reckless, water sprays every day for hours at a time and it never skipped a beat. This R will be a great complement for portraits, landscapes and slow moving wildlife. Based on my trip to Kenya last year, not a problem! I like that the shutter curtains close when you turn off the cam to replace a lens. Like you said, I worry about that as well. Good to see you back in health!

Nice video and thanks! I really like the new EOS R system and camera and that’s coming from a Sony shooter! Like you said, Canon only releases high-quality products that just work. The new R system looks great with some nice lenses and I’m sure people will really like using. As the R system develops it should mature nicely into a very reliable system and should make for a seamless transition for current Canon DSLR users. Glad to see Canon and Nikon introduce new mirrorless cameras. Welcome back and thanks for your insights!🤙

The point you make about the new "R" system seems to be overlooked by all the other photo bloggers out there. The fact that Canon have released the 28-70 f2 straight away is a huge step in what the lens engineers can produce and will improve on in the near future. I really like the autofocus system including the Face/Eye AF but dislike the max frames per second with continuous AF. I have always shot with Canon 6D's but if I had to choose, I would buy the Sony A73.
Glad to see you are doing well! ;-)
