Canon EOS R Mirrorless Camera | First Look Review

Показать описание
It's here at last! Announcing Canon's first full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS-R! Featuring a 30.3MP CMOS sensor, over 5000 dual-pixel AF points, and built on the new RF mount, the EOS-R is a revolutionary shift in the Canon ecosystem.

Along with the EOS-R come four new lenses: the RF 28-70 f/2, 50mm f/1.2, 35mm f/1.8 Macro, and a 24-105mm f/4. Each are built to take advantage of the new shorter flange distance of the RF mount, and come with control rings for a fully customized shooting experience. And for those with a collection Canon EF lenses, Canon provides an EF to RF adapter for seamless adaptation of EF lenses to the EOS-R. There's also a drop-in filter mount adapter, that allows ND and polarizing filters to be dropped in-between the EF lenses and RF mount.

Seems like everyone who’s hating on this camera only wants it for video. How about those of us who don’t really film videos, I think I would be happy with the photos this produces!

I was exited about C-Log but 120 FPS just at 720p and cropped 4K... those are a deal breaker for me. I’m a simple man who loves slow motion and shallow DOF, Sony is still and by far the King of the mirrorless.

David, great overview. I'm glad you focused on ergonomics with this. Canon did put in some useful looking features into the system like that control ring and the EF adapter with filters.

This is an interesting product, and it looks great, but honestly I'm going to stick with my Sony a7iii. I owned a rebel T5i and was going to upgrade to the 6D mark II, but when the a7iii was released I just couldnt resist. Same price point, much better camera. I feel like the a7iii is still a better value than the EOS R. Although those lenses do look pretty coo... Nevermind... I just looked up the prices.

4K crop? Are you serious? And and no eye af? Ugh… who else is upset.

Why does the thumbnail look like it was made in 1986

I was surprised that you left out the fact that this model shoots 10-bit 4.2.2 externally. As a film maker that shoots with a DSLR (GH5), I think this fact opens up the door to drawing more creatives to Canon. As much as I love my GH5, I’m always open to more choices. The new Canon EOS R might be what more people are looking for. A great still camera that’s also capable of shooting 10-bit for professional control in post.

What are the negatives compared to the 5D Mark III and IV?

Interesting concept with the control ring on the lenses. I’ll be reading up on that feature for sure.

If this was sold at the same price or a little over the A7II, I would consider it. Three years ago, Sony was heavily criticized for the same limitations that this camera have right now. Low battery life, 1 card slot, no joystick, cropped 4K and still no IBIS. Sad thing is a lot those Sony critics would get this camera because it’s a “Canon”. And of course their usual “color science” and “flippy screen” argument will be their reason to buy this camera.

I'm drooling over this. I normally not a mirrorless fan. But this one does everything I want. I assume I can shoot video while looking through the view finder on this camera? Because on bright sunny days that would be awesome.

I used to love Canon DSLR’s but they can’t seem to catch up to Sony when it comes to video mode.

Unlike many folks, I really don't care about 4K and video so If you are into that, i think, get dedicated unit; Canon has an excellent lineup of cine bodies and lenses thus IMHO there is no need to add this functionality (other than those functions useful for bloggers and occasional shooters) to an entry level FF body. The EOS R is looking promising for stills and I am glad the fairly inexpensive adapter works with (reportedly) EOS FF lenses without the loss of functionality/quality. Hopefully the IQ and DR will surpass that of 6D2 (an easy feat to accomplish), the 6D and the 5DM4. The one important recommendation I have is not to pre-order a Canon camera solely based on PRE-PRODUCTION reviews and test shots. The 6DM2 pre-production model reported better DR and IQ than those of the actual production units. A mistake I made and quickly found that my 5-year old and water-damaged 6D blew the new 6DM2 out of the water in DR and IQ. (SO glad i returned both 6DM2 bodies - liked the AF but IQ and DR = garbage) Early pre-production reviews regarding low light performance and IQ in the EOS R are looking good at this time but those are mostly biased sponsored and/or actual advertisements so I am waiting this one out until some real hand-on pics and numbers come out. RIght now it's a toss up between the the original 6D (still manufactured) and the new EOS R.

Just 6 years ago people would say why do I need 30 mp? Now it’s kind of the norm.

Looking forward to a review of the video functions.
