This video explains how to spot the signs of whitespot parasite (also known as ick or ich), how to treat it and also how to prevent the parasite becoming a problem.
Making sure your aquarium or pond is well filtered and not overstocked is the most basic way to help the fish stay healthy but feeding with quality food is also of high importance - especially in a tank as there will be no insects or other natural food finding their way into an aquarium as there are in a pond.
95% of aquarium problems are filter related so it is the obvious place to start when making the aquatic environment as good as it can be for your fish.
How to cure white spot / ich / ick is no great secret but if not done properly you can lose fish and if white spot is not treated it can cause many unnecessary fatalities.
Once a problem is identified and a water test has confirmed that there are no elevated pollution levels causing the fish to be stressed / lethargic, a close inspection of the fish may reveal tiny salt grain sized white spots on the fins and body of fish. This video explains what to do in that situation and how to minimize the threat to your fish stock.
If caught early, whitespot / ick is easily treated and should result in full recovery for all fish affected but every day which passes without treatment the chances of survival will reduce to the point of wipeout.

One of the best "how to treat ich" videos on YouTube!!!

Yes, if treated badly the strain can be very difficult to shift - it can often be lodged within the gills and impossible to spot once the boys spots have gone. Garlic does make a hell of a difference and I hear what you say about the shop chasing it from tank to tank. I see that regularly that;s why we're so obsessed by separate nets and filters for the tanks. Prevention is better (and cheaper) than cure.

+B Elliot I can't reply to your comment on my video for some reason which is a bummer. Glad you enjoyed the video. When fish have whitespot its always best to test the water to make sure that there are no underlying water quality problems and treat with the full course of treatment as per manufacturers instructions, raising the temperature to 26 degrees Centigrade to speed up the life cycle of the parasite. I generally wouldn't remove fish from the main tank unless they were knackered and being picked on by the other fish as the whole tank will need to be treated as you've found out. Sounds like you bought some dodgy fish or brought in some poor quality water when they came in.

I added a little bit of aquarium salt and the white spotts were gone from my neon tetras after 2 days. They only had 1-3 spots each when i started medicating, seemed pretty easy to get rid of though.

Very helpful video. I'm on my way to the store now. How many Molly fish can you put in a 10 gallon tank?

another way to avoid ich is to always buy from repeatable local fish stores. never buy from big chains like petsathome. trust me

Hi Richard. I'm new at tropical fish. I thought I would buy a canister filter from Kogan but I am unsure of what size to get. What do you recomend please.

No worries, man. Glad you liked it. We haven't got loads of unusual fish in at present but still have a pretty good selection and the cleanliness of the tanks and filters is very important to us as that dictates fish health. Well that and using good quality suppliers for our livestock.
The cherry shrimps will go an awesome deep cherry colour as they grow.

There are bound to be more than just Spectrum which has garlic but the Thera+ from Spectrum has a higher percentage of garlic than the rest of foods on the range. You can crush fresh garlic and mix with your existing food. When eaten by the fish it will have the same effect.
I'm out of Thera+ but I do ship worldwide when I have it. The last lot went to Brazil to a guy who bought 6 of them. Should have it back on ebay in a couple of weeks.

Do you have a video on uv sterilizers? I wanted to know that if I used two 9watt uv sterilizers, in line on each of my eheim 2075 canister filters is it equivalent to using one 18watt on only one of my

Velvet looks like a fine dusting of yellow tiny spots and can be seen in conjunction with slime thickening / opaque patches on the body of fish. Protozin will treat parasites living in slime so is great for those ailments as well as white spot.

do you think I should keep feeding them the garlic food every so often as well as the chemicals being put in the tank?
