In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm sharing my reaction to the miraculous new song by The Beatles. It's November of 2023, and through the use of state-of-the-art technology, we get a brand new song written by John Lennon and performed by all four original band members. It's nostalgic. It's beautiful. It's The Beatles!

That was exactly my reaction too. I don't know if young people can understand that. Everything is different with the Beatles. Not only were they the first in many ways, they were also incredibly approachable. They didn't seem like today's superstars, but they were always our people. And as we grew up with them and grew older, including during their solo careers, the Beatles really became like our brothers, members of our families. Really. And when such a symbolic conclusion takes place today - the final Beates song - it is as if a family member had died.

I’ve seen some older individuals in the comments saying that they don’t know whether younger people can understand and appreciate this song and The Beatles.

Well, let me tell you. I am 22 years old. I was born August 26, 2001. And The Beatles are my favorite band of all time. I’ve researched them extensively and listened to their entire discography. Watching the music video for Now and Then brought me to tears. There will never be another band like them.

As a 16 year old who watched John, Paul, George and the lunchtime sessions in The Cavern in 1962, we knew they were going places. I was in the audience the day Mr Brian Epstein came to see what all the fuss was about.

Then Ringo joined and the circle was complete.
They had an aura thats never been seen before. They were ours, they belonged to us in Liverpool.
It was only a matter of time that we knew we would have to share them with the world and we we're happy to do so.
They split, i wept like a baby.
Then we lost John. The biggest tragedy in musical history.
I cried for weeks.

The Dream Was Over.

Then George passed, another loss....and more tears.

Now, all these years later, 2023 they're bigger now than they've ever been.

Seeing them together in this video, i have shed more tears.

I've loved this quartet for 62 years and i was 78 on the 6th of November, still living in Liverpool and I'll love them til the day I pass away.

God bless John, Paul, George and Ringo for all their talents and achievements they have shared with the world.

Love, Love, Love

It is mind blowing. This is the DNA of The Beatles. Nobody can match this. I got tears in my eyes. I am fan since I was 14 years old. ❤

John’s last words to Paul were:
“Think about me every now and then, old friend”
It makes the song hit so personally

Seeing the older Beatles playing with heir old mates, having a bit of a lark, being serious. This is so nostalgic it brings a tear to my 69 year old eyes. So sad and sweet - I prefer this tune to the other new two. Thank you for your intelligent commentary, and being able to share this moment in time.

This video gets me every time.
I didn't know Giles Martin wrote the orchestral arrangement, what a wonderful touch, he clearly has the Beatles in his genes.
They take a bow and their name in lights are turned off. Powerful

I was bawling my eyes out just listening to the lyrics, realising how apt and appropriate it was as the last song and message for the fans. What really hit me was the last scene where they bowed and disappeared. It just dawned on me that that would be the final time we would see of them together with new materials. What a perfect end to the Beatles' catalogue.

There's no way not to get emotional, my mother was also very emotional, the whole world loves the Beatles.

Hearing Paul and Ringo singing "now and then i miss you" is heartwrenching. And it means so much to all of us, because we all have people we miss "now and then".

That fact that, in 2023, we've received 'new' projects from The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd & The Beatles speaks volumes about the human potential (to varying degrees). Thanks Doug.

Not only is Now & Then a great song for all the reasons that Doug said, but the release of this song means that my teenage sons, who are huge Beatles fans, were able to experience the release of a new Beatles song. They will always remember this moment in time, and I expect that they will one day tell their children and grandchildren about the day the last Beatles song was released. By finishing this song in 2023, Paul, Ringo, Giles, and all others involved have given us a great gift.

I listened to the audio version on the 2nd, the day it dropped. I had it saved and then when I got home from work the first thing my son said to me was "mom, you have to listen to the new Beatles song" (yes, I raised him right. he's a huge Beatle fan and a musician himself). I waited until everyone had gone to bed and I sat outside on the patio, plugged in my earbuds and was blown away. I sat and sobbed like a baby. And then I had a surreal experience because John appeared to me and said it was their final goodbye. I was gobsmacked. Then the next day the video dropped and I watched and cried my eyes out even harder than the night before. I can't count how many times I've listened to this since a week ago today, but I'm sure its in the 100s. I still cry every time I listen. This has been the greatest gift this 62 yr old woman could ever get. What a marvelous gift we've been given.

I don't think I ever seen Doug so genuinely delighted about a piece of music.

No band will ever come close, musical gods. History in the making, I see it's reaching out to younger audiences that maybe unfamiliar with there masterpieces. Woohoo. It was number 42 in the UK charts, as of now straight to number 1. What a song. Well done to the fab 4 well deserve it.

I bought my first Beatles song in 1963 ‘She loves you’ I was six years old. Never in my wildest dreams sixty years later I have bought a new Beatles song. To me, this is very emotional song and as Paul said, it’s a good way to end the Beatles
