In this video, we’re going to talk about the ketogenic diet and constipation.

Some people think that a lack of fiber causes constipation—this is not true. In fact, adding more fiber may make matters worse.

Your gut microbes may not be fully adapted to your new ketogenic diet. When you consume fiber, your gut microbes feed on it. It can take time for them to adapt to new sources of fiber. Until then, it’s best to avoid some foods.

If kale and broccoli cause bloating and constipation while you’re on keto, you may have to cut back and try other vegetables that do not cause these problems. Instead, try lettuce and spinach, which tend to be easier on the stomach.

Fermented vegetables are also great options for those who are experiencing constipation on keto.

Consuming way too much fat on keto—especially before your body has adapted—may lead to constipation. Try lowering your fat consumption until your body is fully keto-adapted.

When you start on keto, you may also lose a lot of water weight, which can deplete electrolytes. Low electrolytes and dehydration can also lead to constipation. Make sure you replenish your electrolyte while you’re adapting to keto.

In conclusion, try these tips:
• Lower your cruciferous vegetables
• Lower your fat consumption
• Limit your nuts and seeds or germinate them
• Avoid dairy with high lactose and casein

Let me know how these tips work for you in the comments below.

I had to pause keto because I got constipated, made myself a nice banana-papaya smoothie, and then had some prune juice. I know this is a sin for someone in keto, but my butt is very thankful.

I went 4 months on Keto with no issues whatsoever and his a spell where I was backed up for 3 days. Bloated, having abdominal pains, couldn't eat (felt like I just had no room in my stomach). Not sure what caused it, but took extra potassium/magnesium and drank some extra water and things started moving again and no more problems.

I had a wedding reception where they had fried chicken, mac & cheese, mashed taters, and rolls and mixed nuts, and real butter. I had a lot of nuts and butter and tried to pick as much breading as I could off of the chicken, but still ended up eating some. I think when you are used to eating a certain way (no wheat for 4 months), and then you have some it throws things for a loop. I think I will just eat before these events from now on and have a big bowl of fasting while I am there.

Minerals are depleted rapidly on the diet. The moment I took plenty of magnesium constipation vanished. Make sure to take citrate and malate.

THanks for talking about this, the fad of keto has led a lot of people astray, and good info about how to use it properly is so important.

Just fill a blender to the top with Spinach, 2 cups of water and blend until liquid. Wait until the foam rises to the top and pour the dark green juice into a cup leaving the foam behind and drink that healthy packed green juice. Within an hour you will be far from constipated...guaranteed !

I have never been constipated in my life. I’m on keto for a month and have to constantly drink psyllium husks to make me go. I’m starting to question this keto diet. It shouldn’t be that way 😕

In my opinion, constipation should not be ignored or taken lightly, especially if you have not had a bowel movement in days. I’ve read that some folks have two to three bowel movements a day.

I’m thinking it becomes dangerous if you have diverticulosis (small, bulging pouches in your digestive tract) and it develops diverticulitis (infected pouches). Those pouches become full of crap and get infected, causing tremendous, stabbing pain in your abdomen. They’re difficult to diagnose and in my case, my Dr ordered an MRI that revealed exactly what was the source of my pain. Massive amounts of antibiotics were prescribed to treat the infection. Left untreated, those pouches can burst into the abdominal cavity causing major problems if not death itself.

I’ve already had two flare-ups so I try to be regular. Beans, oatmeal, raw vegetables, oranges 🍊, flax seed, seem to work for my constipation. Unfortunately, these food items are not recommended on the KETO diet. I’m caught between a rock and a hard place. I want to lose weight and feel healthier on KETO but on the other hand don’t want to feel constipated . However, magnesium supplements seem to help some.

Thank you thank you thank you Dr Berg! I will definitely look into taking one of these possible items at a time to try and decipher what’s actually causing my constipation. As always please keep sharing your knowledge! Blessings. *Marco

I started taking pro-biotics and avoid dairy products as much as possible to see if it would help and it worked great! No more constipation!

To cure my insomnia and constipation I have to
A) have apple/banana/good oats (carbs) early evening,
B) limit IF to 12 hours a day, sometimes 14,
C) my last meal 6pm is ok, but not 4pm. Too empty belly going to bed nails me
Wish I can do it better but I just can't. Tried how many times

Thank you so much! I ordered your electrolyte powder this week and should get it in 2 days. I need it badly. I have had constipation on this KETO lifestyle lately. I have never ever been constipated until now. I'm so looking foward to getting back my potassium, magnesium, and electrolytes needed on this journey! Thank you again for your very informative video! You are the best!

I used to eat 2 apples a day to be regular and then some. I’m now on keto diet for about 6 weeks and have lost 16 lbs but I’m not regular anymore 😔. I do miss my apples.

Tried everything mentioned, what worked for me is flaxseed, 1.5 tbsp in a glass of boiled water.
