Naming A Company

Naming our business, Shoes of Prey, was definitely a tough decision that went through a few stages of brainstorming but we do often get asked how we decided/came up with a name so here's how we went about the decision.
Hopefully talking through our process helps spark some ideas or at least assists you through the brainstorming part! If you've got any questions or suggestions for others going through the process please leave them in the comments below.

I'm probably late, but me and my close friend sat down a couple of weeks ago after he decided to start work on his web development and design company to think of a name. We took HOURS that night thinking and looking with, as you said, our laptops near us, googling name meanings in Greek and other languages that sounded cool or relatable or easy to memorize. We still didn't decide on anything but he has a couple taken down! He's still working on his website and in the process of building his company so he wasn't in a hurry, and this video came right in time! thanks! I'll have to show him as soon as I see him.

I remember discovering Shoes of Prey back when I was in high school, and telling myself I'd buy a pair when I could afford it. I'm working on a startup too, and we just decided on a name, but after sitting with it for a few days and watching this video, I think we need to do more brainstorming! As a female entrepreneur you are a huge inspiration of mine, love all of your videos and please do more on Shoes of Prey/your work! xo

I observe myself to be really good at this words combination. Unlike others I can think the name of my company even before the intent of building it. Thank you Jodie once more for this video. I am working going to work for a startup as a tech manager and though the founders have named their product but it does not speak for itself. It is not short and sweet. Your video will help me a lot to come up with a name. :)

So much detail! I found that thinking about how people would say the name helped. I had wanted to buy the website name "School" but then wondered how much confusion people would have when they pass on that they looked at the school website (confusing it with their school website). I ended up getting Schoolyard which is harder to get wrong.
Other tips include watching out for typos i.e. Prey/Pray and also plurals i.e. Shoe of Prey/Shoes of Prey

I totally understand this process. It took me a week to come up with ImproSelf.com . I learned this trick where if you were to yell out your company name would people be able to spell it and get a clue for its meaning. For example my name is ImproSelf, Improve yourself. Some people even said it reminded them of Improve One's Self. Which is exactly what I wanted.

Hey Jodie, the timing of your video is uncanny! I am in the process of evolving Cake and I'm finding it's a lot easier to do for clients than for myself as my head and heart are having a heated discussion!

Initially I was simply evolving the brand (logo aesthetics etc) to better reflect my services and what I offer to clients. However the question has popped up about whether to keep the name Cake Marketing or completely rebrand.

On one hand I have strong equity in the name but it is regionally (location) specific and not global. On the other hand since I began in 2008 a few others have entered the market with similar names. Firstly, a US marketing software company - named Cake Marketing - has launched in Australia (Feb 2015) and another person is using Cake Services offering marketing communications consultancy...very, very close to what I do.

I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts when you have time. Complete rebrand (gosh, I'd have to find another name) OR forge ahead with Cake Marketing regardless of the other two in the marketplace and evolve the branding.
