Roads and interstates around Asheville, North Carolina were washed out by surging floodwaters, essentially cutting the city off. Other towns and portions of western North Carolina have been heavily damaged from the rain that fell from what was then Hurricane Helene.

At least 64 people are dead and others have been reported missing in the southeast U.S. after Helene made landfall Thursday night as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph.

Moody's Analytics said property damages could range from $15-26 billion.

The aerial footage was provided by NBC affiliate WYFF.

Asheville, NC resident here. Yes, it's really as bad as it looks. No power, no cell service, no wifi, no water, no road access in or out for an enormous amount of people. Fortunately I live off one of very few roads in the county that maintained power. Our water is out though. Authorities say will be weeks before power and water is fully back. I drove around after the storm and some water had receded. Absolutely devastating. FEMA, National Guard, agencies from 19 states, even Canadian services vehicles are here trying to help. Thank you to those who risk their lives daily to save others in this catastrophe no one imagined possible in our beautiful mountain city.😢

Hurricanes and mountains never mix well. The flooding is always horrific. My deepest condolences for those who have lost loved ones. My prayers for strength and fortitude while trying to grieve and recover. 🙏🕯️

It’s a depressing time. For once I have no idea how to move forward. Staring at all my stuff scattered for miles is just too much right now.

That'll change your priorities quickly. I can't image. Anyone could lose a house, but this the actual town, roads and all.

How do you rebuild after this? How does one get rid of all that mud and debris??
Just heartbreaking.

Over 6, 000 power line poles are destroyed. Hundreds of people still missing. They just found 3 more bodies floating in the French Broad River. 10-03-24. Dear Jesus, Please save us. AMEN.

Just think about all the homes, businesses, historic areas, roads and bridges that will have to be rebuilt if possible. Will take millions and years to do. So sad.

Shows how little and insignificant we are on this planet!!

If the Carolinas and Tennessee are this devastated, I wonder what Florida small towns look like. I see Ceder Key and other rural areas 100% flattened!

No more proxy wars.
Use the money at home.

At least they muted the video about donating to the Red Cross because of the overwhelming response in the comments of how little, if any of the money or help the Red Cross actually gives, is received from the intended donation. Find a local charity, group, or organization that you can verify that gives all proceeds to those in need.

I live on the coast of NC. Never imagined this would happen in the West. Unreal.

I was just there in August. It's such a unique and beautiful place. The variety of small shops, the music on the streets, the diverse food options and the beauty of seeing the mountains at overlook spots. It's heartbreaking to see it look like this. I hope Asheville gets all the support and resources it needs for the people and to rebuild.

It's ok to scream. Crying is ok too. I might have a heart attack if I came back to my home and saw this.... Praying and hope are good things to send, but money, temp housing and the National Guard come next...
