Authorities across a wide swath of the southeastern United States faced the daunting task on Saturday of cleaning up from Hurricane Helene, one of the most powerful to hit the country, as the death toll continued to rise.

Drone video captured large areas of property damage, downed trees and collapsed buildings in Horseshoe Beach, Florida— part of Florida's Big Bend region.

The storm, now a post-tropical cyclone, was expected to hover over the Tennessee Valley on Saturday and Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said.

So tired of hearing "dont live in hurricane zones". Yeah ok, and the whole midwest population shouldnt live in tornado zones, californians shouldnt live in earthquake zones, and anyone living in heavily forested or mountainous zones shouldnt live there because of forest fires right? I know! Why dont we all live on a small patch of land in the desert in Arizona! The incredible ignorance of some people is astounding. Not to mention the lack of humanity.

Looks like the Florida building codes saved hundreds of thousands of homes. Lots of older buildings destroyed as well as gazebos and sheds, boats, and vehicles etc damaged, but surprising the number of homes with no roof damage. Where we lived in Florida, all new gazebos had to have stainless steel guy wires across each roof beam or bearer, anchoring gazebos down to concrete. All the houses had to have storm shutters for every window, our house had them in the garage and you just put them up when a storm was coming, we also had intrusion bars to secure the garage roller door.. Florida will learn from every storm where Building codes can keep residents safe. Sorry to hear there were 52 lives lost.

One thing that this video shows very clearly: All buildings that are still standing are made of bricks or concrete. If you live in a tornado zone: Do not build your house with plywood.

I don't understand why people live close to the OCEAN and don't expect a Hurricane to come through eventually

Now there’s over 2000 dead and the numbers will continue to climb as they dig out from the debris and mud. God be with all the dead and the living affected by Helene and the flooding.

How many people without freshwater and how many casualties? Yet still we don’t see much help from the Government or from FEMA? I guess everybody is to busy watching football.

My Dad would always say nevverr live near the ocean, or down a hill, we lived at the top of the hill and it was steep hill. But we would see a stream of water runnning down the backyard at the end of the yard it always flooded in the neighbors yard, the advantages of living on top of the hill. Its so sad so many have perished. :But we sure needed the rain. God bless those who family members.. So tragic so sad..

Florida should have mandated all living structures with round shapes, dome shapes, cone shapes and only above flood zone area.
