Probably because it's in the Jedi archives and is taught as a defensive mechanism with your lightsaber, Yoda does similar stuff but using the force with his hands.

Luke tapped into the sacrificial love of the light side. He threw down his saber. Whether he knew how to block it or not is irrelevant. I don't know why this is so hard to understand. You can't just one on one palps. You have to sacrifice yourself for the love of your friends and the hope of the light side still inside Anakin.
